BUT: I was able to break through with the wrong image at the beginning with the image verification!
So maybe having a slow connection (that I have now) in connection with the back function of the browser and tipping on the same location of the picture every time may break your beginning verification.
Afair it said "Homer Simpson" I selected the wrong image, got the error message, took the back button (newest firefox) clicked on the same location (rose afair), the text still said "Homer Simpson" and suddenly I was at the registering page.

I'd check this if I were you.
Thanks. The new plug-in actually broke this one. I temporarily disabled it for the mean time and see if the new plugin is enough to stop the spammers. As of the moment, it looks like it's doing its job nicely.

If it is not too much work for you, publishing the list of spammers per month would be a good punishment for the guys, because the community will do the rest.

I guess the image verification that you switched off was too weak.

The only thing that bothers me is:
why did they come past "Image Verification" (which is rather a captcha) plus "Spam Check Level 2"?
Btw. I'd rename "Spam Check Level 2" to a rather not so
searchable item like "Are you made of flesh and blood"
or similar.

Also it would be interesting what anti spam measurements were working on site on the day the spam robots registered - I guess you can figure that out from your log files. After that you'll know which measurements were too weak.

Wouldn't it be better to moderate new users' first few posts?

Ok, so I guess that's where the bar needs to be raised. Is it possible to add some sort of turing test on the verification page?

Yeah, captcha or similar. It doesn't have to be fullproof, it just has to break the automation so that the script kiddies will go elsewhere.

I think it's mighty tricky to use codes to try to identify whether the user is human or another script. Afaik most captchas have been circumvented by now.

Again: It doesn't have to be fullproof, it just has to break the automation so that the script kiddies will go elsewhere.
