That is the irony. Instead of having a standard format and making devices compatible with standard formats, apple makes yet another format for its devices. Now if we have each device having its own format that will create a lot of formats and a big headache.

To clarify, it doesn't bother me at all that Google et al. are making finger-friendly UI redesigns -- nor that the iPhone's popularity triggered it. What bothers me is:
  1. Using UA as the only method of selecting the UI.
  2. Hard-coding dimensions instead of designing it more generally; like the greasemonkey script does.
These both stem from the short-sighted view that they need to design for the iPhone, not for a whole generation of touch-screen devices.

No one (company, group, government) is paying enough to pave way for an 'open standard' anything (device, OS, whatever) to gain market dominance. That is just the way things have been, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

the iphone was popular (a ipod owners wet dream in a way) since before it was launched.

i do believe i read rumors (repeated in what i would call mainstream press non the less) of a apple phone since the first mobile phones got the ability to play mp3 files...

you just cant by that kind of popularity...

That doesnt mean that every goddamn company can have thier own version!!
Look at nokia....... no proprietary format. Nokia is all about values.

I brought this up earlier last year when there was a period of intense moaning and groaning about all things Nokia here, but it seemed to get shot down. I for one think it would be a great idea especially since the audience on the forum is growing.

I don't know...there are some things about every company that show "values" but in the end Nokia is a corporation like all corporations and it all comes down to the bottom line.

I feel that if they felt that the NITs were contributing to the bottom line more they'd invest more into it. However it's not. If they were about values, perhaps they would throw more money at the NITs so that they can develop and grow at a faster rate.

Just a thought.

I used to be opposed to that, but I'm starting to come around... of course, Reggie is the guy to persuade.

Man, I knew the post would be responded to but to this degree? So much vitriol for a little well-intentioned criticism? Get a life please, there are more important things in life than Nokia or Apple!

The tone not PC enough? Sorry but that was intentional, the situation around n8x0 is so not good, the community so self deluded into strange complacency a horse kick of some kind was badly needed. Admit though as far as horse kicks go this was a soft one, gentlemanly even. So relax a bit please.

Finally let us hope something good will come out of it. n8x0 has some potential as media player and Canola project is a great and badly needed undertaking. And hopefully a decent vector based GPS mapping app will emerge one day. And it looks Maemo people will be doing some major cleaning of their own soon.

I'm not hopeful though for a major rewrite of the OS to provide more consistent/friendlier user interface (touch vs stylus based), call me a pessimist but that appears way outside Nokia competency and not something that a community of enthusiasts is properly suited for. So this will never be as polished as Apple products as disappointing as that is.

So to be realistic, I see n8x0 remaining a generally sloppily supported half-baked product for the rest of its natural life, another tech gizmo to play around with, a perfect little geek toy.

You haven't provided a shred of quantitative evidence to support any of your claims.
