Tried XP (also under VMWare) this time, same result. Played with older versions (was recommended on the HAVA forums as a potential solution), same result.

Next step, reinstalling XP in BootCamp on the MacBook (had removed it previously since I have no need of a Windows install). Result? The same.

Nonsense so far, they really should've just provided a web interface for setup or something. :\
I agree, a web interface would have made alot of sense. their config wizard is rather "quirky".

i think you will have best chances with a pure windows xp installation, atleast for configuring it. seems like if your computer can;t find the Hava box, it;s a show stopper.

just some hints-make sure your device is physically connected to your network and got a DHCP address. I had to change out my hub for a switch because it wasn;t autonegotiating correctly-the link light would blink and not remain steady. i think the Hava client finds the "local hava device" by mac address or some other hardware scheme.

i couldn;t figure out how to set the IP address for the local wired connection. I could set it for the wireless card though along with security to connect to my router. as far as I could tell, atleast my Titanium doesn;t act as a wireless host.

for remote access, open up port 56123 and maybe 1234. also enable Upnp on your router as I think the remote wizard adds 2 entries for 56123 and 5540. I don;t know why. the way your hava connects to the internet and is advertised is by connecting to Hava;s P2P server(hope they don;t go out of business!).

goodluck!

as for feedback on the Nokia Hava Beta, it works pretty well. I am pleased with the quality of the picture and sound. the quality is much better than say flash videos on youtube.

i guess i never noticed but my battery life while playing video is only about 2 hours or so. I guess this is very power intensive. I usually get 5-7 hrs with light web surfing or listening to MP3's.

I used XP on VMWare Fusion on my MBP and it worked great, except for maximizing the video. I downloaded and installed the latest PC HAVA Player though.

wonder if it could be a problem not having the latest vmware tools installed. Or hardware acceleration set to max.

OK, finally got it up and running—lot easier to screw with these things when you're not working through vnc and ssh. Ended up using my dad's XP laptop (from work, of course ) since he was in town.

Works pretty well. Image quality is a little worse than I was expecting (more of a sub-par encoder issue than a bandwidth issue), but it's not too bad. The whole system seems pretty solid once you get it going, and there's not too much work involved there as long as you're using their recommended setup OS.

HAVA Player is a battery killer (well, duh CPU pegged and wifi screaming the whole time). I only got about 2 hours out of it before I hit the low-battery warnings.

Curious about your comment on the image quality -- how are you connecting the Hava to your cable/satellite box? And did you try it with other content (i.e., non-animated)?

Cable box via component and a DVD player via s-video, both were about equal (think the downscaler may have a bit to do with the lower quality of the stuff from the cable box). Yes, I've tried a variety of content (animated actually looks the best). Artifacting tends to be an issue with motion-level transitions (from low-motion to high-motion). I'd say it's about two steps this side of YouTube quality.

I am finding the navigate up and down buttons to be very sensitive. If I hit them whilst on the menu screens of my sky+ satallite box instead of moving up one it moves up two. Is this a bug or is there a setting somewhere I can change? Other than this I have found it great.

Seems like I recall a repeat tuning screen in the wizard. . . .

GA: Mind to tell us about your setup, down to nuts and bolts, please? You are the one that posted some difficulty at first, so would be good to see how tricky is. And how about some $ too, see how much is the damage and your package, platinum? TIA,

bun
