Why all the comparison and such with Youtube?

Youtube in my honest opinion is crap anyways. If you base a phone choice souly on Youtube you need to have your head examined.

Ok I admit this is drawing needles. I absolutely love the device and will prolly get it myself. My point is that people tend to praise the device more than it deserves. Yes it does play youtube, but not without stuttering. It does do some multitasking (in some sense, i.e., pausing programs) but not as one is used to do on a PC.

As I mentioned - youtube/the browser fully multitasks, as does bounce, as does the Mp3 player - tell me that isnt multitasking - this isnt a iphone mate. All you need to do is look at a youtube video to corroborate this, why are you bothering,
bounce seems to enter some semi-paused state. youtube clips are paused right? Mp3s does multitask yes.

no its not an Iphone, I didnt even bother signing an iphone forum... never liked it. Toy

The point is that there is no point in discussing multitasking if the phone is not even capable of playing youtube clips without stuttering (unless there is a fundamental software error / lack of optimization).

Any by discussing multitasking I mean in the sense of praising how powerful the phone is.

Must be my English. The application needs to pause ITSELF. The OS won't move a finger to pause anything, regardless of what view you are in.

So if you cant download at high speeds at the same time as watching, how are you supposed to be able to multitask?
You can. I'm just saying it might impact framerate.

what do you mean by quite ok? It in the eye of the beholder but any stuttering would irritate me. Specially if I want to enjoy a movie
You should then not buy any mobile phones for such purposes. There is no mobile hardware available today that can display all content PERFECTLY under all circumstances.

(Ive seen that even divx quality video stutters on n900)
That is plain wrong. There was either something running in the background (yes, that pesky multitasking), or you were looking at videos that are in a high-bitrate format that is not hardware accelerated. For example, the '9' trailer that comes with the device is 3500kbps MPEG4 video with 192kpbs AAC audio and it can be played back without stuttering.

It doesnt on my x2 3800+
So ? Are you expecting the N900 to overcome something that is not universal on desktop class hardware ?

first video - personally I cant see the stuttering, only possibly at the beginning when panning in the first second (caching??)

second video - its outputting to a 1080p TV, give it a break

third video is from September - early firmware - looking at recent videos you just dont get this stuttering at all.

Look Im not saying the N900 is the be all and end all but your comments seem slightly, well disingenuous really. It doesnt stutter youtube videos per say, it does fully multitask - look at this video and tell me it doesnt - just like a PC. http://tr.im/EVtr

BTW you *are* aware that while saying youtube, you are in fact discussing Flash, which is entirely Adobe's domain, and technically has very little to do with the N900 and Nokia in general ?

EDIT: And, note that nearly all stutters 'demostrated' in links above are more likely the result of multitasking. If the N900 has a problem with multitasking, it's that it can't be turned OFF.

If it does download a podcast while playing an mp3 while I surf the web with the browser with an IM client receiving messages... yes, that's multitasking...

Your example is meaningless, the fact that some kind of multitasking is too cpu-heavy does not mean that the N900 does not multitask...

yes you are right. I believed that it paused applications except a few (such as mp3 playback) but I was wrong :P
