If you want to have a clear look at how many and what satelites are locked or not while using the gps, you can use GPSJinni quite easily for that purpous.

You can find it in the Extras-Devel.

One of the sources of confusion here is that a bug in Ovi maps makes it stop searching for a lock after 30 seconds or a minute (can't remember which), which isn't enough time to get a cold fix. By running another app like location-test-gui that continously checks the GPS state, you circumvent that problem. Once locked, you can then close the other app and just use Ovi (and i write "use" here in a most optimistic way).

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

All ok now. thanks
Helps to get a good signal and the location-test gui helps know that.
I'd used eCoach but that doesnt provide the info location-test does.

To add my experience to this thread:
I just did some testing outside in the garden. I disabled my wifi (with wifi switcher) and don't have any gsm/3g dataconnection. I started Ovi Maps and let it search for a GPS lock. After about 30 seconds it gave up, while telling me that it could not find the GPS signal.
Then i started GPSJinni (available in extras-testing). It found a GPS lock rather quickly. Then i started Ovi Maps, and within a few seconds it could find the GPS signal, all without a dataconnection

I just bought a N900, and I love it. As a Linux user with Ubuntu on my home machine, I love the terminal, and the openness of the system.

The only think that the N900 hasn't satisfied on my smartphone wishlist, (made before seeing the N900) besides multi-touch, is the GPS. I know it has one, but I cant get it to work.

I do not have any sim card or plan, as my wallet is still recovering. The N900 is working fine without it, but do I need a sim card to use the GPS?

I have left it outside where it should get good reception, and connected to a wifi network as was mentioned earlier by Torpedo48:

and all it did was say "searching."

Not too important, though it would have helped me from messing up my directions today.
(I probably would have wrecked the car, looking at it though.)

Any help, or enlightenment would be helpful.
Question: Do I need a sim card/data plan to get the GPS to work, and if not, what is required?

goto settings and select location then enable network positioning.and also change the location server address from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com.
see if its work or no
