Those would propably be Navteq's super-laser cars.
Navteq touts 3D laser mapping technology

I don't think it's that common. Ovi Maps is just now turning free, Nokia will use it to improve future sales.
Future sales? N900 came out only three months ago!! Many people will buy new N900 in the future, because the price now starts to decreasem and free navigation would be a strong plus!!

Of course as a comunity we can request more attention to Nokia and promote feature implementation... the maemo guys will hopefully listen.
That's not the point, this is Nokia's flagship product, this should be their first priority regardless. If it's not their priority product then it should not be labeled as the flagship product. So far Nokia has not handle this FLAGSHIP product well enough at all, months of several delays, several bugs, and poor support.

I imagine the decisions at Nokia are made by Inspecter Clouseau!

"We have a great product - N900 we have a large user base here in Europe and a teeny-weeny user base in the USA. Where shall we launch first? It's a no brainer - let's launch in the USA!"

"There are bugs in the N900's firmware. Let's prematurely release new firmware and create new ones"

"Maemo 5 is complete but still needs some work. F*** it! Let's create a new version and ignore the current version it's a few months old - that's ancient"

"Let's announce free ovi maps update to 10 phones, ignore the n97 flagship phone and don't worry we'll release a free version for maemo - except it will be the new version we have not finished yet"

"The n900 sold really well! How can we improve sales? We could release the free ovi maps for it too what a great selling point! Why spend £500 on a gps sat nav system when you can buy an n900 phone and functioning computer instead? - Nah! F*** it we'll release for the next non-existent maemo & phone version instead!"

And therein lies the problem!

If the rumour is true that sygic held back their release to wait for nokia's OVI store then it seems logical to assume that the two companies have an agreement. Said agreement would surely cover nokia not undermining sygic's product so just before it is launched.

Jaco2k,

Don`t you think in other direction - maybe all of us, which are using N900, are pissed from Symbian?
Maybe we see a possibility in N900 that Nokia can/will change their thoughts about their faithful users and bring good possibilities for upgrade OS, update with newer apps and games, just as other phone producers do? I`m talking about Apple and Google.
I do not understand why Nokia is selling very expensive devised, but without possibility to upgrade it? It no make sence.

I am still thinking that N900 is grate device, but if in next year or two Nokia will not bring Maemo 6 and other functionalities to N900 it will be my last Nokia device. Just as I did with SonyEricsson`s smartphones.

Regards and I hope Nokia to change its mind and start act as real friend to his users.

No, just no.

Sygic is owned by Teleatlas. Teleatlas is Navteq's biggest competitor. Nokia spent 5 billion euros in buying Navteq. They sure as hell won't be doing stuff like that.

Less silly conspiracy theories please.

The thing I don't get about this is that they made a big thing about the navigation capabilities of the N810. IIRC, the basic device came with a car holder and the Navicore license I got for the 770 transfered over without a hitch.

Nav was a huge part of the previous NIT platforms but is now strangely ignored in the current gen.

I had a N97 for five months before I picked up the N900 and I waited longer for basic bug-fixes initially, even on the big update ( heavily delayed !) thing were still in need of work
The Skype application that was mentioned in N97 marketing STILL isn't released, But that didn't stop me enjoying the device

Nothing is perfect and If you think Nokia is spending any more time or resources on Maemo than it's relatively meagre sales warrant then you are kidding your self.

"It is a business decision after all.."

Patience seems in very short supply round here of late
