With MeeGo coming out months away, in a scale that's considerably larger than maemo... do you think Nokia will still invest the required resources to jumpstart Ovi for maemo?

I have a feeling that it'll be left in current state; with maybe a few minor improvements, until MeeGo is launched.

Oh well, the one consolation as far as I'm concerned about the delay for PR1.2 is that the outlaw release made it clear that there were real supercool features coming. That is worth waiting for, I guess.

The one thing I'm looking forward the most to is workable video calling.

Of course, whenever MeeGo is SUPPOSED to come out, it's a pretty good guess, based on long experience, that it will take a lot longer for it to REALLY come out.

But your guess about Ovi seems too damned likely, you are right. Yuck. Oh well, we always have lots of cool free apps.

If they are sticking to the original plan there should be a somewhat workable version this month sometime.

(certainly wouldn't expect it to be a drop-in replacement for Maemo; but I'm hoping it'll at least have an interface).

But will Meego come out before PR1.2?

That's a joke ... I hope.

Actually, I don't understand all that speculations about MeeGo on N900. Many times the Nokia guys said that MeeGo is platform.

That means that even you are able to run MeeGo on N900 it would still lack some Nokia-specific features anyway. For exam - GSM/3G driver and all stuff. Or else.

Nokia can't sell only hardware, they need to fill hardware with something unique, which is attractive to buyers.

I always took it as Nokia would not provide any support besides a version that basically worked. (no ovi stuff, no email client, etc). But your hardware would at least work.

I still don't understand why Nokia doesn't give more updates on the status of PR1.2. Like, "PR1.2 is still frozen. for testing and to fix some bugs before it is released. We did manage to get a version ready for Hong Kong but some fixes remain for the English language version."

What harm would that sort of status message do?

Too lazy to find the link.. Quim basically said that since the N900 has been officially determined to be the Developer/ARM platform for MeeGo then obviously that would mean it has to work.

So GSM/3G crap should be there. As far as apps and stuff, like Laughing said, thats up in the air. But at the least we should have an OS and a functioning phone.

I don't think anyone disagrees... but we've said this over and over and it hasn't yet changed. It's not likely to any time soon either.

I think you are right about that..
In the thread regarding Meego for the N900, i think Quim said the exact same thing.
On top of that, considering that the N900 is being considered the reference hardware for the Meego platform, all the hardware parameters would have to be working.

What Nokia *might* not release to the general public is a supported version of the Ovi/Nokia specific functions like Maps etc.
Something like what happens in the Symbian world, where the LG/Samsung Symbian phones do not have some software applications which Nokia phones support.

EDIT: Curses. Beat to it by fatalsaint...
