I think everyone here ranting and raving about the next firmware update need to look deeper into what Nokia are upto, may i suggest to everyone reading this thread that they have a look at the one i started and read ALL the peoples comments there and only then you people might just realise a few things.
It looks like there is NO firmware update for Maemo as Nokia are working on a new platform/os for the N900 which will probably be the next "update" the N900 will get. It seems apparent that Maemo is being discontinued and THAT is the very reason the Maemo update everyone is ranting on about is probably never going to come. If only people would explore this community much more than they appear to do instead of jumping on the the wording of a thread that means everything about a future update they then will learn just what is happening in the world of Nokia.

just a thought.... if they're not releasing this 1.2 update, then why would Nokia bother releasing the 1.2 SDK?

That said, please do not take this yet as a commitment to fully productise MeeGo on N900. I am quite confident that we will end up having a really good developer distro for N900 already but committing to stabilise a consumer-grade MeeGo 1.0 (first half this year) for N900 is another story. That is a product business decision beyond my scope. Also, we do not yet know about MeeGo 1 release content. I am not yet sure if I would be personally ready to let my Maemo5 go for the first MeeGo release in my daily N900 use.

@abill_uk
I read that thread of yours before and after crashdamage pointed you to the wiki, I thought things would be clearer for you. But, you seem to have misinterpreted it somewhat.
PR 1.2 will come. There's no need to assume otherwise or proclaim so.
There is a talk of PR 1.3 also which was mentioned by one of the Nokians.

The applications are now being built against the new PR1.2 SDK clearly to get them ready for the upcoming PR1.2 update.
What the wiki DID NOT say is that a proper release of Meego will come(definitely) to the N900. It may or may not, but there has been no official word either confirming it or denying it.
An extract from the wiki in reference to
Please take a better look at the wiki before making such claims. Otherwise such posts would simply lead to more FUD for newcomers/uninformed people and we'll be back to where we started from
