I usually use apt-get from the command line, but I also tried synaptic and it does work, however you need to be somewhat patient as it is rather slow. So I prefer searching for packages on the web pages of Debian and installing from the command line.

lucas777: try running the icon with the red swirl, "Debian chroot", and then post a screenshot (or a copy and paste of the text to the browser) of the output.

apt-get install --no-install-recommends openoffice.org-writer openoffice.org-impress openoffice.org-calc
Doesn't seem faster, and the menus changed from icons to text, but it works fine...

mscion: tap-and-hold should work as right-click for GTK and Gnome apps. KDE apps don't have a right-click hack in Easy Debian.
Hi qole, I tried following these directions but I get an error concerning Package configuration.

It says "Component registries might be corrupted. You are upgrading from a version which might have corrupted service/components". It says to check some rdb files (I'm really over my head now!) and goes on and finally says Try cleanly reinstalling the packages and/or using a clean user profile.

I had downloaded your newest image hoping to upgrade the OO. Should I try uninstalling Debian and then installing from scratch again? Any clue?

mscion: Yes, I got that "component registries might be corrupted" warning, too. But it is just a warning, choose OK and let it continue.

Looks pretty good. From LXDE I ran writer and got the equation editor
to work. Something that was also missing before, OO calc which sets up spread sheets for data analysis, appears to be working.

I think there is an improvement in performance.
For comparison, when starting up writer from LXDE the times were
(within a second or two)

ubuntu 3.1 90s
OO.o2.4 40s
OO.o3.1 60s (the current downloaded version)
OO.o3.2 40s (upgraded version)

So the upgraded version starts up about as fast as the older 2.4
but with more features.

Thanks for everyones help!

Now my next question. Is OOlatex available?

I tried OOO3.2 on v3d but it crashes on the tools/options menu, so beware, better wait for a stable version and stay on 3.1.

hi debernardis I tried the tools/options menu once in writer and played around some. It did not crash for me although I probably did not duplicate your steps once selecting option. (If you recall your steps let me know and I will try it) There are probably several good reasons why this version is not considered stable so I agree that
it is premature to consider this version as other than for testing. If you can actually use it all the better!

FWIW, lucas, I just installed Easy Debian on my new N900 and it works, but like you, nothing happens when I clicked on Synaptic in the menu...

However, when I went back to the Desktop folder location where you see the Debian icons, lo and behold I noticed a Synaptic icon...clicked it and Voila! Synaptic opened up and I download and installed some apps...

HTH,

Mark
