So can you tell us, for example, whether the Finnish and Russian teams intend to work together on the high level stuff such as the UI? Or whether their cooperation is going to be in the Mer level, and we can expect diverging (or perhaps even completely distinct) closed source layers on top of that in different markets?

(asked without any implied criticism - I believe in open source fundamentally, but I can understand how opening your 'special sauce' in a near locked up market looks to the board like commercial suicide).

I have a similar example, also Eng -> Rus -> Eng. It must have been at least 20 years ago if not 30, so the full details fizzled out of my head but the punchline was that "great spirit" came back as "cheap vodka".

Very detailed article about SFOS, OMP and Jollas ties to Russia:
Google Translate

If I understood right there reads e.g. that Mr. George Berezkin(more about him here) owns 60% of Jolla. And Ermak phone is just copy of another Android phone called Coppernic C One

Just a note, Eldar is very biased against Jolla. So take it with a grain of salt.

PS I rememeber, when that ******* claimed that there were only 10k N9s produced. Never did he acknowledge that he was wrong.

Thanks @lantern
I didn't mean to say that it is good article, just detailed. There are some info what I didn't know. But good to know more about this Eldar.

That's funny, but almost every russian businessman from 90's have such "dosje"

Thank you for providing this article. I have to admit I found the Google translation a little hard to read. Perhaps someone could summarize some of the main points. Besides the Russian businessman that owes a 60% stake in Jolla could someone explain a little more clearly the motivation or how Jolla is being sold to the Russian government. Is it mostly due to sanctions (or potential ones) and a desire to own and control your own OS for security reasons? Does this mean that in the future Jolla is pretty much closed to the West as a possible product. Or is what is being discussed a totally separate branch of Sailfish that will be independent of Sailfish's normal development. Kind of a blackberry for the Russian government. I'm fine with that. Every country has to look after it's own interests however crazy it seems, but for me, Sailfish is the only OS that provides a real linux experience I like on a phone or tablet. Are those days over and is it time to give up on that and look elsewhere?

Interesting. I suspected earlier that Jolla would fall out of the hands of Finnish investors, looks like that is now the case.

No disrespect to the Russian folks here (who I think are fantastic contributors) but I cannot support Sailfish now it is controlled by a Russian oligarch like Grigory Berezkin. We all know that if dear old Uncle Putin wishes to place a back door, kill-switch, snooping device, or whatever in Sailfish code, then the likes of Berezkin are obliged to do as he demands. You can see the politicizing of Sailfish already in the language that is being used. The Russian government aren't interested in Sailfish because it's a better technology than Android or iOS. They are not interested in it because they want an open platform. They are interested only because they have come into this with a political agenda first (they don't want 95% of Russians using Apple/Google). I think getting into Sailfish with this mind-set is the wrong way to go, and I think the result will not be satisfactory.

We all know that if NSA wants, they decrypt Google's traffic on the Gmail server, provide gag orders, etc. And we know it for sure, unlike ...

Yeah, cause governments are for charity.
If business is not interested in spending money on Jolla, then Jolla will have to take it from anybody or be dead. Pity, but it's that simple.

PS If it's not clear, I'm interested in free Jolla. But since US killed Nokia and stockholders said 'yes' to it (or were delusional, or were bribed, you choose it), chances are very low for that. In 21st century David can't beat Goliath (Android,iOS).
