Because it takes a while to ship and package up electronic devices. To update the software would mean unpacking and updating them.

That or Nokia has blazing fast manufacturers that can create tons of n900s in a week. =P

then why the delay?

the devices have been in the assembly factories, waiting for the last firmware update. that apparently happened this weekend, now they're being packed and shipped.

no one would pack a delayed product, only to un- and repack it before shipping.

SubCore is right, this is why we had to wait. And the devices were not packed, before the latest software is installed! It's not the first device NOKIA has assembled!?

We'll see when they start arriving with people. It will certainly be interesting to see what the gap between the installed firmware date and today actually is.

That would have meant they shipped a device with problems without a solution - which they now have with a new firmware which everyone can update!

Thanks for that. We were just winding ourselves up on the "thread of all threads", as we only had retailers and rumours to go with.
Proper information goes a long way to retaining faith

The delay would be so that the new firmware update is available as soon as people unpack their device.

I don't know which it is but it could go either way. Nokia could have been manufacturing and packing N900s all this time with the expectation people update it as soon as they get it. They could also have been manufacturing them and leaving them aside to be factory flashed so they ship with the new firmware but that has a lot of logistical problems.

Quite honestly, not being sure about the ship date until the date of the shipping is a rather sad statement.

Regardless, congratulations to all the people out there who will now get their new phone.

Nokia has had a few problems when it comes to serving applications or even firmware updates to just the internet tablets. Imagine the n900 which has even more popularity!

And also it could be because there were bugs that could net in terrible reviews so they rather hold onto the device until those were fixed.
