Which does not make interoperability really working thing anyways :-)) I've found it almost certainly impossible to send MMS to another country and quite problematic to send to a different cellular operator.

"Excactly opposite thing here in Russia. It costs next to nothing to send a small amount of data via EDGE/3G and MMS are quite expensive and there is *NO* flat rate (nor there is one for SMS)"

same in uk.

- It causes a clash of IP network addresses when both data connections are active.
- It needs special settings for each operator.
- Just like regular GPRS data sometimes needs you to enter special settings on the N900 because the defaults don't always work out of the box and the operators don't have specific N900 support yet, only MMS is even less likely to work out of the box and the right settings are harder to find and even harder to test.
- When operators do support the N900, like other phones it'll be be by sending service command SMS to update the phone settings, so handling of those will be needed.
- That means service command UI too.
- There's more than one way to recieve MMSs, depending on the operator.
- You need a special MMS browser to display them, because they have features like animation, sound, video and scrolling text sequencing, not just showing a static picture.
- Someone has to figure out how to fit that into Conversations sensibly. Thumbnails?

Unfortunately almost every part seems likely to have to be rewritten for Maemo compared with Symbian, although a few bits and pieces might be usable, and much of it would make handy reference code
Well, MMS is standardized and Nokia knows about all pitfalls and loopholes and shortcuts, it is not like they would have to invent the wheel all over, they only have to implement it in Maemo.

Judging by the simplicity of the phone functionality (it is simpler than in the phones that cost 30 Euro unlocked), maybe it is a big jump to get MMS in there? but only in relative terms IMO.

There are hundreds (thousands even?) of operators, and MMS is configured by operators. I know that some operators have poor quality, but that is not only SMS, it is also regarding data and international roaming. The larger ones, the ones that own and run the hardware, are much better than the smaller "cheaper" ones.

I have sent/received MMS from all over Europe for the last 5 years at least, with no problems.

Well, that depends on your operator and package. If you are on pay-as-you-go (as Granny is) an MMs costs about 50p, whereas data is a minimum of £1/day. And it costs nothing to receive an MMS, whereas data costs to both send and receive.

I personally recieve about 5 MMS a year, and I think I sent 2 in the last year or so. So it's not a huge feature for me... you know why? The person I would most want to send to has an MMS capable phone, but never enabled the receiving on her pay-as-you-go because she doesn't know how to use it. She would never, ever in a million years, enable data on her phone.

I find I wonder about the company people here keep. I have a data plen. I have a fancy phone. But I also have friends and family who use basic candy bars without data. Am I the only one who keep company with 'normal' people?

MMS is not used anything as much as SMS. But it is used. And for those odd occasions, it's missed.

(and to the person who told me to call my Granny... not even Skjype reaches where she is now. )

All I know is I've used it.. and it's a nice feature to have..

Does it really have to be more complicated than that?

is it? But at 73p/kb, that's 73p every day you use data. And you can't recieve email without paying that £1... A minimum of 73p and a max of £1 is hardly a lot of leewary.

So a payg user send an MMS to another payg user: cost 50p to sender
Or a payg user send a photo via email to another payg user: cost £1 to sender and £1 to reciever. Which do you prefer?

I personally wanted to use MMS already several years ago, not for sending pictures, but to be able to write longer messages since I find 160 character limit of the SMS really frustrating. But unfortunately no one else of my contacts were using it, so I could not use it either.

Now that MMS is slowly gaining some popularity and some of my contacts are trying to send me MMS, I find myself working/living in country were the operators don't have any agreements to send or receive MMS with foreign operators. And since most of my contacts are living in other countries, I cannot send nor receive MMS.

So the fact that my N900 does not support it, it's not such a big deal for me. I wouldn't mind it, but I couldn't use it here either.

BTW, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you should be able to send an MMS (from those phones that support MMS, of course) to an email address. That is, instead of writing the recipients phone number, one could write the email address. This way even the N900 is able to receive MMS. At least this works on the operators I have used.
