It's called Steam, and it is massively popular on desktops.

As for the rest -- yeah, you are right. People who think that 'appstores' and 'ecosystems' will ever be popular on desktops are either incompetent or severely deluded.

Also, mobile devices will eventually converge with desktops and get rid of the 'appstore' nonsense. It's only a matter of time.

You might be ignorant and/or uninformed, but many *nix distributions have already used this software distribution model for awhile; those based on Debian come to mind (maybe you've heard of Ubuntu? you can google that) and the BSDs.

Afaic it's the other way around: mobile devices have copied 'features' of their precursor (desktop, et al) from their inception, so the convergence of mobile and desktop appstores is inevitable.

The difference is that the distribution is not limited to that store. When the app distribution method is limited, this is what people wrongly call the "ecosystem" of an app store when in fact an ecosystem would actually be one where no limitation on distribution of apps exist; where sourceforge.net is a method of distribution, where a repo is a method of distribution, where email is a method of distribution. This diversity is what should be defined as an ecosystem. one apple tree which a handful of worms feed on is not much of an ecosystem.

That is just Apple's (asshat) business model. Android devices can have multiple appstores just fine.
