I've been using an 8 gb Kingston Class 6 SDHC card in the slot inside the battery compartment for about a month, large (>100 mb) and small files stored on it, and haven't had a burp yet, knock wood.

Its a week later and no problems (which is an excellent improvement on the half day that I got out of the las 2 sandisks) I have not been treating it with kid gloves either - have loaded a few movies and a number of albums onto it via wlan as well as usb between the n800 and pc. So far so good.

if anyone knows of a blown Kingston please report here.

Request for the moderators: is it possible to have a poll so people can give stats on their experiences?
Actually, if you'll look back through this thread you will find where I have at least twice stated I am using two 4GB SDHC Kingston cards (Class 2, I think) for close to two months no with no problems at all. One is used to hold Music (LOTS of music) and PDFs to read, the other is used exclusively with MaemoMapper to hold maps, routes, etc.

I've had my N800 for about a month, using Kingston 2GB SD in internal slot (/, swap), and PNY 8GB SDHC (maps, movies, dictionaries). I've transferred movies and dictionaries via USB (Mac OS X), and maps via download. The only anomaly I've noticed is the difficulty in unmounting the cards from the Mac. After USB transfer, the N800 has to be restarted in order to show the internal card.

Yesterday my external slot Transcend 2.0 GB 150x card corrupted again transfering a 21 MB PDF file via FTP (WiFi). It's the 10th or 11th time it occurs, with all the differents firmwares since I purchased my device.

So, how can I contact with technical service at Nokia and get my unit replaced with one like yours? I purchased it on-line, at Nokia store, here in Spain (Europe)

I want to be able to use maemo mapper (corrupts the card if I download 10 or 20 maps), transfer large files, use it with canola, etc.

The Transcend aspect rears its ugly head once again...

I'm steering completely clear of those.

I had a SanDisk 2 GB Ultra II SD Plus USB card that got the axe in the external slot; my Adata 8 GB SDHC in the internal slot is fine. From the bug page and this thread, I gather that all SanDisk cards die horrible deaths with the N800. It's a pricey lesson.

I did really like the SD->USB ability, though. Does anyone have an SD card that can do this that also doesn't die in the N800?

I just went thru this whole thread looking for one message in which someone said his card had a lifetime warrantee and asked if anyone had tried returning their card to the manufacturer for a refund/replacement. I never saw a reply.

But, I thought of a couple of things while reading:

1) Why does each of us have to post about this in Bugzilla? Can't the developers read this thread? I don't see how anyone who reads this thread can be anything but convinced there is a problem.

2) My impression is that more than 50% of users who get high capacity cards have this problem. That's a pretty high failure rate. Does someone like Texrat disagree? If someone does disagree, what is their estimate of the percentage of purchasers of high capacity cards who have this problem? Is there a way that Nokia could take a poll and get an unbiased estimate of the extent of this problem?

What I just discovered today, Nokia is working on a fix for this right now.

(When it is finished and released? That I do not know...)

This thread as been floating around long enough, I should have added my $0.02 by now. Of course, the US dollar is down on most currency exchanges, so my $0.02 is probably only worth $0.01 in 2006 money.

OK, terrible joking aside, like Pete I have a Kingston 8GB Class 6 SDHC card in the internal slot. I've had it there for around a month now, and I have experienced no problems. I have not, however, tried to enable the swap file because of others' reported problems with it. I previously had used the included 128MB miniSD card as swap with no problems, but I've been doing without since the 8GB Kingston took up residence.

The external slot, however, was another story. Though I had used various 1GB and under SD cards in my external slot with no problems (and continue to do so), using the Kingston 8GB in the external slot caused some odd behavior. For the first week or so, it merely unmounted at odd times; I wouldn't even notice it had disappeared from the system until Canola updated its database and insisted there was no music for it to play. Opening the slot and removing and reinserting the card always brought it back to normal. This continued for about a week, and then an application (I forgot which) complained about a corrupted file. I tried looking at the card on my PC using a reader I thought was SDHC-certified (it wasn't). The PC wanted to format the card, which freaked me out as that's similar to what others have experienced when their card was toast. Since I wasn't sure about the reader though, I pulled the card out of the reader and put it in the only other device that I was sure supported SDHC, my Treo 680. It confirmed the card now needed formatting, but it formatted the card successfully, and I was able to copy some Treo files back and forth. I removed the card from my Treo and, based on some others' experiences, I decided to try the card in the N800's internal slot. I copied over my data from a backup, and everything has been fine since.

Although my card's corruption definitely started in the N800's external slot, I'm not sure if it or the bad card reader is to blame for wiping out the directory structure (or perhaps even interaction between the two). After the incident, the card has worked fine in the internal slot, and that's where it's staying.

I wouldn't say all. Sandisk is my main choice of cards and so far none of mine have had issues. Actually, other than the 32 meg one I mentioned (make unknown, and it was the external slot...), none have had issues with my N800s at all. Guess I'm pushing fate...

It is just best in general to manage bug reporting in a single location. That's just good practice. Bugzilla is the place.

To those who question why they should be so burdened, my simple answer is: welcome to Linux.
