Multiple variants increase cost of production. I see no problem with Jolla making one device first.

I do agree with Jalyst on the specifications. I can claim to comprehend the problems Jolla has to make higher specced phones at some level, but at the same time that irritates me more is the reluctance from the fans to demand more from Jolla.
Anybody who has followed Nokia for past 7 years must already know where that "it's enough" attitude takes you. They should be pushing the envelope, not repeating the old mistakes. Imo Jolla should have done better on hardware and design.

I'd prefer 2 GB RAM, but 1 GB will do it as well. So far the biggest memory hog on N9(50) was Firefox, and newer versions of Gecko optimized memory footprint a lot. Unless you plan to run 20 applications at once, 1 GB will be OK. Also, memory is costly and I guess Jolla tried to keep the price acceptable. Making a $700 handset would be too biting. And Jolla has small production capacity so far, so they can't make huge discounts.

Therefore Jolla have probably higher R&D costs, and so they need to ask more of their phones even if hw didn't cost that much.
There's no doubt they could've been more aggressive than they have been, some perfect examples are start-ups like Meizu & Xiaomi.

A large part of the co. is based in HK to reduce costs, they even flirted with being based in the mainland, but i think that got put on-hold, for now.
Those two co's generally target a slightly higher price segment, but what they offer for the $ is quite impressive, & with some searching their top-end units can be found for not far off Jolla's price.
Jolla has further expenses due to devising the entire stack/ecosystem, but in light of what co's like those 2 have managed, they def. could've been slightly more aggressive than they've been, so far.

Remains to be seen if Jolla's phone will be much better in that respect, there was lots of hype around them being poor BQ "because they're Chinese".
And there was some truth to it in the early days, but they're getting much better as each year passes...
