I concur...but at the same time,If they finds it interesting to discuss it, it may not be nonsense to them. Let it fly...

Does that actually happen? I'd feel like suing them if they don't let me use any device that complies with a mobile standard....

EDIT: Actually, I'd check the contract... they may be in breach, in which case you just change carrier or whatever.

To be more explanatory, I mean individual(s) or team(s) would sell dozens (possibly more) of the phones /month to the public.
This would be done on a informal basis, & all proceeds from sales would go back to Jolla, they would take no cut...*
I'm not sure of the legalities of this in my own country, let alone the many others, it may not even be possible to register as a NFP.

It probably only need be done in countries where big telcos/resellers & wholesalers/retailers are persistently showing 0 interest.
If there's 1x of each of the following showing interest: telco, telco_reseller, wholesaler, & retailer, then x country could be scratched.
I imagine this would be tricky to do, as you can't trust everyone to behave ethically, but, it might just help stimulate things in the right way.
I guess you could have a more commercial model, but I think that could get messier, & harder for Jolla to extricate itself from LT.

Thoughts?

*Jolla could also have a method for determining a quota of free phones it gives to devs/public in x country each mth for x period
Well to me it certainly seemed highly unlikely to be practical, crazy enough that it may just help in ways unforeseen.
But, judging by the sound of crickets here, I'm guessing the consensus is that it's a complete dead end...

Doubt Jolla would even consider something like that, but I'm no expert in the areas touched on.
I guess nobody answered in detail to further that speculation on what Jolla should do because in the end; Jolla will hopefully do something that's good for their growth. I'm quite sure there's quite a few people here better versed in discussing what would be a better direction for Jolla's future plans than myself - I tend to look at the gadget, the UI/UX and marketing first, developer interactions and accessibility second, their strategies of infiltration into markets that aren't directly connected to my home areas last - and then go from there.

Simply stated, I want Jolla to come out with something now while there's a bit of a vacuum that exists mainly due to Nokia withdrawing/being purchased by Microsoft and Windows Phone never living up to the 3rd platform talks that Elop repeated incessantly to make people comfortable with it possibly failing and accepting 3rd best.

Jolla needs distribution channels, savvy marketing, a developer's program that embraces devs outside of this forum and perhaps some serious guerrilla marketing that isn't hard to decipher to the layman.

Targeting the Maemo/MeeGo folks is a wrong ploy. All of those devices that Nokia seeded and very few of them landed in people's hands that really would have used them. Too many times have I seen devs use their own money and/or ask for a device from an user that still had it boxed up with dust on it to be donated to them. I'm not preaching that those users were wrong. I'm saying that those kind of "developers" are wrong for Jolla during this startup phase.

I won't name names. But some folks that got the N950 were plain useless and selfish. A repeat of that would be a bad thing.

To be fair, the commercial program* was hugely scaled down in-the-end, it was minuscule compared to the WP one that they subsequently ramped up. I think they pissed-off a lot of devs through that whole process, many just had sour grapes, not making excuses for poor form of some of them though. And as we all know, N950 just ended-up being a terrible device from which to conduct their dev work in a meaningful/practical way, no idea why it become just as central (or more) as the N9.

So it sounds like you've no real thoughts directly relating to some of the ideas there, no worries, thanks for the feedback anyway, maybe I'll put it directly to Jolla**. They probably won't give me any feedback about whether any of it's been incorporated into, or influenced their plans in some way. But, if it inspires them to think of things they haven't already, or to think in different ways, then that at least is a good thing, I guess.

*let alone the "community" programs
**in a slightly more detailed fashion

Odd question that begs to be asked...

Why do you think you're qualified enough to tell/ask/discuss what Jolla should do?

In this area? As I said I don't really....
But much of their own messaging has been to "get involved", & not just in a dev sense.
It's just in that spirit that I act. Plus folks here have often been up for it too.

No thanks for me, juiceme? You seem to be sparing all your thanks for anyone but me lately.
I can only assume that means you think everything put up doesn't make sense or you disagree.
I don't suppose you care to weigh-in? Or anyone else for that matter...

I can start a dedicated thread if folks no longer feel this is the Sailfish(Jolla) water-cooler thread?
