Step 1:

Call Tmo and ask for CUSTOMER LOYALTY (DO NOT tell Customer Care that you are trying to change your data plan. CC CAN give you the 5.99 Tzones but most CC reps will put up a fight so to avoid nasty notes on your account, just ask for Customer Loyalty Department)

Step 2: After the CLD rep says "Thank you for calling T-Mobile, my name is......" You respond, "Hello (CLD Reps name), my name is (your name), How are you today?" That will soften up almost any CLD Rep into helpful tone of the call.

Step 3: Proceed to tell the CLD Rep that you are calling to save money on your lines (True, we all are trying to save money) and that you were told that you needed to speak to someone in the Customer Loyalty Department to have the Granfathered $5.99 Tzones Internet added to your line(s) and that Customer Care transferred you over to them (CLD Rep) You have to be sure you know WHY you are calling.

Step 4: You may get a response from the CLD rep that will just place you on hold and add the $5.99 Tzones Web right away or they may just try to explain the (false) benefits of the plan that you have with "smartphone" data plan and how you won't have access to the full web (false again). Just reaffirm the CLD Rep that all of that is ok and that your main concern is saving money yet still having *basic* access to the web and email.

Step 4: Just incase you get Johnny "By the books" Rocket who sticks to his fresh training material that says $5.99 Tzones is not compatible. JUST AGREE TO EVERYTHING AND CHANGE NOTHING ON YOUR ACCOUNT AND SAY "THANK YOU FOR TRYING TO HELP" and then call right back and start at step 1. Customer Loyalty's job is to keep customers happy at all costs so that they will stay with tmobile. Never get angry with them and always call back. They can help when no one else can.

Step 5: Once the CLD Rep has added the $5.99 Tzones Web to your line(s), proceed to thank the Rep several times in a show of gratitude that they have helped SAVE you money and keep your lines. That will go a long way and not only is it true but it makes the CLD have a job well done.

Facts about the $5.99 Tzones Web:

It overrides the $9.99 Tzones Web AND the "Smartphone" Dataplan. By override, I mean that the old Tzones plan does NOT contain any splashpages that tell you to upgrade to another data plan. It is THE internet plan that is "above" those other dataplans. It works with ALL unlocked phones that can be used on Tmo (with correct settings) and will work as if it IS the higher priced data plans. The $9.99 plan will tell you to upgrade to another plan based on phone model. The $5.99 plan is exempt (for now and has been since its designation as Granfathered: Thats the Granfathered Benefit, Overrides newer data plans.) EXCEPT.......

2: OS Specific Data Plans: $5.99 Tzones Web does NOT override Android, Blackberry and SideKick data plans. Those data plans are on a different Tier than the Smartphone Dataplans and cannot be overridden for that very reason.

I hope this helps someone save money. This has helped me for more than 2 years of the 4 with Tmo. I have dropped the granfathered plans, gotten them back, switched to Android, gotten them back, closed lines, opened new lines and got it back again. All by just telling the truth that the Customer Loyalty Department has free will to add this plan and that all I wanted to do was save money on my account while having basic internet usage. (browse the web, check email).
It actually worked.....the CR put me on $5 data plan on each line and I also got $15 unlimited msg shared on both lines...and also got 750 minutes instead of 700 minutes.... thanks a lot for the suggestion..!!

you should get a standard non-pda device and stick your sim in and use it for a while then call in and fix the data plan.

then after you can confirm that you have it, put it back in y,the device you ant.

the downside is that if yhou still try to use a tmo branded device rather then an unbranded device, thier system can auto detect it being a high data use device and make it so that every time you try to use the internet opuitside the tzones, it will give you an error to pay an addition 1.99 per mb.

you can use

internet2.voicestream.com

or

epc.tmobile.com

i have found recently that i had to change the apn back and forth as i started getting errors.

but......still working!

Actually, when I stick my SIM in non-pda (dumb phone) the T-Zones work perfectly that is why I have no reason to call them up !!

Looks like the $10 unlimited data plan might be disappearing under the new, rumored terms

WOW!!!!! Just when I thought I typed all that for nothing!!!!! I am so glad you were able to save money and get better internet. Enjoy your $5.99 unlimited internet and all of the benefits that come with it!

Hearing of your success made my day!

Edit: Also, as mentioned in my original how to, the $5.99 Tzones plan does not override Android plans by design. All Tmobile Android phones will ask you to upgrade your data plan.

Yeah, I wasn't able to get my G2 to work with $5 data plan but I was able to get the upgraded data plan for $20 instead of $30 by talking to CLD again :P (but I have $5 data plan on my second line with iPhone and the speed is pretty decent, I also have a 15% student discount applied to my account so that would make up for it ) T-Mobile has discount associated with AAA and Universities...!!!

Awesome! I am glad CLD worked something out for you and you still saved money!

TmoNews is reporting that T-Mobile USA will be altering data plans starting November 3rd. I STRONGLY, STRONGLY recommend that ANYONE that wants to get a cheaper dataplan and keep it, do it before November 3rd. The more Tmobile changes the dataplans, the more difficult it is to get the granfathered plan. After November 3rd, the CSR reps are going to be "armed" with these new plans and may do all in their power to "encourage" you to switch to a plan that is either A: More Expensive or B: Gives you less data for your money.

I would hate for some people to wake up Nov. 3rd with their phone telling them they have to upgrade to a "New Smartphone" plan. That happened to my wife with her E63 the last time T-Mobile changed their plans. We spoke with CLD and got our granfathered $5.99 back because the $10 plan told us to upgrade to the $30"Smartphone" plan.

Anyone have any thought on how this will affect Even More vs. Even More Plus?

I assume if I'm on Even More (contract), TMo would have to wait out my contract plan, or wait until I change it, to change what they are charging for data.

On the other hand, since I'm on Even More Plus (no contract) with the $10 unlimited web, can they change it when my current month is up?

Looks like I could move to Even More Plus ($10 extra per month) get on contract, get a free non-smartphone, and likely be safe for the next 2 years

or

Wait it out, see what happens, and possibly end up paying $15 extra ($25 EM+ data plan charge). Or would EM+ current plan be grandfathered until I change something?
