Have you ever seen a chicken before it hatches. Not pretty. I hope this poor guy will make it back to its clamshell.

I can only guess that this is due to the problems with the lithium polymer battery that they were using. I think it was bigger than they had expected it would be:

And if that wasn't enough, we a bit trouble with the rechargeable battery, as it was pretty hard designing a battery with that high capacity that also FITS into the case. This delayed the case - but I'm happy to announce that the final battery is already being prototyped. As soon as we get it (which should be within the next week), the case design will be ready a few days later (we set the deadline for the case design to January 15th). Prototyping shouldn't take too long - and then it will only be a matter of a few weeks more until everything is ready for delivery.
PS: daperl, you do realize that you linked to an almost 70MB video, don't you?

EDIT: After watching the video, I've seen another reason why Nokia's offering is going to be so much better. The GUI on that thing is amateurish and rudimentary. They should have used Hildon.

the basic thing here is that we are seeing the insides of a process that most companies hide from outsiders...

Quite.

Well they've also decided to produce a new board (old one had some issues so I understand), not sure if it's different in the fit; also, afaiu they've only had a prototype case so far, and needed to get hold of the keyboard bits and bobs to see if more case changes are required. Obviously they were for some or all of the above reasons (and the battery - very odd).

the basic thing here is that we are seeing the insides of a process that most companies hide from outsiders...
Of course, but in that case managing expectations better would have been a good idea. Even without the LCD delay, the battery changes, keyboard/case tweaks and mainboard fixes would still be necessary so the project would still be running severely late.

Anyway, I'm just a bit disappointed really.

Yeah, that's probably not good. Thanks, I'll fix it. I'm today's winner.

daperl: I know that can't be the real Jesus. He would have capitalized "Internet".

Also, from the blog you linked to:

It's now using Matchbox already (the Window Manager we want to use)
Wow. Matchbox WM, after being beaten with the Ugly Stick a few dozen times.

Poor Jesus, always being misquoted.

Yeah, I wish those guys luck, but there seems to be something missing over at that project. Maybe it's time for a poll? What will customers see first? Something like this or a Pandora?

Well, I am pretty sure we will not see Pandora devices any time soon (the "roadmap" quoted a few posts ago is laughable). As to the Freescale-based netbook, it all depends on whether Freescale finds a manufacturer and how much it is willing to push its new chip to this market. My guess is that it will have problems getting major manufacturers (like ASUS) to use it: after all, they all have netbooks out already and these netbooks run Windows. Freescale netbook design will not run Windows and thus will be of limited market value.

Well, there's little doubt that you're right and that I'm in denial, but they keep writing those articles. Even so, I've decided to stay optimistic that Ubuntu will soon attract an ARM partner. A light, zippy netbook with a 9 hour charge should attract more than just us geeks. And if they can get close to that "sub-$200" netbook target. Watch out!

I think we will see the Pandora, but probably not till March at the very earliest, which is pretty late and certainly other things will be coming out which would make one think twice about the Pandora.

Regarding the interface, who cares , the whole point of getting one of these is to do dev work on it and try your own (well actually everyone seems to think they should be used for playing games, but that seems like a waste of everyone's time, far better to get everyone writing code )
