This thread is just about organising the application launcher icons, unfortunately.

A complete package to do what? If you want to use a predefined layout, look at catorise/mymenu. If you want a personalised setup, you'll currently have to edit the files yourself. I suppose a menu editor is perfectly possible, but it's not something that I've seen anyone having implemented yet.

@lemmyslender: Now, that sounds interesting - that way, after installing a new application one could simply check whether it was automatically categorised (no problem) or whether one has to do it manually (at least no more work than without auto-categorisation).

May I link to your post from my Appendix?

@Cobra: Great, glad I could be of help! Though all I did was compile into a single post some of the great techniques others came up with.

@rolan900d: While a menu editor wouldn't be that much of a problem (I'd say it would take me only a couple of days, and that includes the fact that it's been less than a week since I first started looking into Python ), but what definitely keeps me - and probably others - away from giving it a try is the fact that one could easily mess up other people's phone.

Writing in this thread and warning people that they risk screwing up their Hildon themselves is one thing - providing a package for the application manager, where people simply install something and expect it to work, is a totally different one.

And then there's still the problem than with the next update Hildon could be turned upside down again, and then one would have an army of grumpy users at your doorstep...

@Nathraiben Is there a workaround for Using this system along with the "rearrange" feature introduced in PR1.2? Cos catorise manages to do it..

Also my reason for using this reason, is cos I heard catorise uses more CPU cycles and hence reduces battery life..

Please feel free to do so.

I think I found most of the info either here (tmo) or in the desktop spec I linked to for the categories.

Like I mentioned only some of the developers are adding the category info into the .desktop files. I wish more would. So it can be confusing when you install 3 apps that show up and you manually assign a category, and a fourth doesn't show up (or where you expect it to), andy you have to go find it.

For instance Qole does with his Easy Debian, so when installed, the apps show up in the proper categories. However, I prefer to have them all in a "Debian" folder, so the excludes were needed. I *think* that without the excludes the apps would show up in multiple folders (might not be a bad thing)

One additional item you can use as well (I don't think I saw it in your post):

You can use custom icons for your categories by placing them (*.png) in
/home/user/.local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon

@rnb89: None that I know of. But I'm not sure about what system Catorise uses (And here I'll admit to my lacking knowledge about repositories: Is Categorise open source? Could I download a copy of the source code in order to take a look at it's inner workings?).

I fear it uses a totally different approach, but maybe it could still hint on a way to incorporate the re-arrange feature (and thus also make everything more stable, since our changes wouldn't be overwritten by that feature anymore).

(Btw, updating the Appendix right now - trying to get a feeling for which unwanted behaviour hints on what kind of mistake)

Just a short "Fix it during your coffee break" notice: There was a mistake in the tutorial, concerning the submenus folder. Of course it's not /home/user/.config/menus/hildon/submenus but /home/user/.config/menus/submenus - unless, of course, you specified <MergeDir>hildon/submenus</MergeDir> in your hildon.menu file!

Thanks for helping spot the mistake, rantom!

*back to work*
