Vote for bug 8165 - https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165

You got exactly that problem - gst-video-thumbnailred locks video accelerator. Even video from backside camera is not played.

Temporary workaround: Install KMPlayer and use it. But before use just verify that gst-video-thumbnailred was not started by standard system media player - don't use a standard system media player. Or go to X-Term shell and execute a command

killall gst-video-thumbnailerd

It can temporary unlock your video accelerator.

An equalizer may be a good idea if this is not an off topic

I think the N900 is capable of playing 720p videos or mkv videos without bigger problems, but the software for it needs to be tweaked (since it's not officialy supported yet).
Seeing as how the N900 can't display or output close to 720p these kinds of tests are a waste of time. the device will only be scaling the video down and this looses quality; thus nullifying the point of the exercise.

I strongly disagree with cashclientel. Even though N900 cannot display 720p and will have to downscale the video, it would be very beneficial to be able to play these videos. For me the difference of using a mobile device as a media player is whether there is a need of re-encoding or not. If the videos play as they are, the device will be used - otherwise not.

Touché pillar - although Jack6428's test did prove what we already knew - the N900 can't play any HD content.

Because it's not supported at the moment by the OS (software). The hardware can do it with ease. At least mplayer manages to start playing the files, unlike the default player which shouts "unsupported format". Give it time, sooner or later it will work. It's a miracle it actually can play most of the formats without the need for re-encoding out of the box. HD is just another ballgame.
