Not a lot new showing up

Maemo
http://layala.blogspot.com/2005/08/maemo.html
A blog in Mexico, discovering you can develop now in Maemo without having to wait for the 770 to come out. And, hey, you can find out how to take screen captures inside Maemo in the developer's list archives. I know: I asked there.

>>In my strategy for the next months Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is a fundamental piece. In the Web of Nokia Spain they mark it clearly with "next", so I deduce that we are one of the countries in which it will be put on sale "in the third trimester of the year". That is, already.

OK, apologies for the rough translation. That's Babelfish for you.

Notes that the 770 doesn't have a camera. How the heck you drop the cost and throw in every feature is beyond me. And what's this in a comment -- no, don't wait for
la "2ª edición" before you buy. It'll be worth it now.

Edited to add notice that over at
Pixel y Dixel
http://pixelydixel.blogspot.com/2005...ordenador.html
this report is quoted in full in "Nokia 770 Un microORDENADOR!" (That is, Nokia 770 A microCOMPUTER!)

Error correction
At the beginning of August there was a flurry of attention when Mohammed DAMT (who works "for a telecommunication company which is located in Helsinki, Finland") compiled the game Prince of Persia in Ubuntu and succeeded in running it in Maemo as well.

Unfortunately, the picture that ran at Nokia770.com was actually the Ubuntu version. Here's the Maemo game capture that Mohammed posted, which is, as you can see, running at 320 x 240.

Marcelo Oliveira, the leading games enthusiast among the crew, promised he'd put the Brazilian "bug-fixing guru" Cidorvan on it. Any success, guys?

Someone in the comments had repeated the rumor that the 770 is really slow; tintachina's full response was "Slow... It was bound to have some problem The ideal would be to wait for the second edition, but the reality is that there's nothing that measures up in the marketplace, not even the PSP." Based on that, I don't think he's actually planning to wait for the second edition.

Plus, as we all know, that "really slow" rumor isn't terribly credible.

Sounds like your Spanish is better than my Babelfish.

This is from Tommi Komulainen's blog, via Planet.Maemo. I suspect this might be related to get a Google Talk-compatible IM. For Internet Tablet 2005, I hope?

Long, interesting post here on the blog *Michael Parekh on IT*
On Sony PSP as a Web Browsing Platform
http://mp.blogs.com/mp/2005/08/on_sony_psp_a_w.html
>>Regular readers know of my never-ending quest for the perfect, on-the-go wireless web tablet/PDA, that can be used for regular internet activities anywhere in the house, and preferably on the go, using Wi-Fi, EV-DO and/or Cellular networks.

Following Russell Beattie's enthusiastic reports of surfing with the PSP, Parekh jumped into the water and found it less than pleasant:

>>[T]he key problems [of the PSP]: no keyboard, cryptic interface, and memory hog.
...
>>It takes a lot of add-ons to make the PSP a viable internet browsing device, and by the time you do so, you've got something like the Pepperpad . . . that's to be priced around $850
...
>>Or you could buy the PSP for $230, add a keyboard when it's out for $50, then add 2GB of memory, assuming it works, for another $200, and you've got a barely passable internet surfing device for around $500.

The reason I'm posting this report here and not in the sporadic PSP forum is because Parekh wonders why Beattie liked the PSP so much when he panned the Nokia 770 on its announcement.

Of course, we know that the 770's display is better suited for browsing and that the on-screen keyboard works better on its bigger display. And its UI is based on existing approaches, not going its own way. When you add that to Beattie's instant-on gratification, I think Parekh is going to like the 770 a lot.

Parekh concludes by asking if the PSP is really "an internet tablet? Not yet." And you can see he's ready for a real one. Like the Nokia 770. Coming out 3Q 2005.

>>Teemu is playing with cool toys at the company he works for, Movial, which is developing components and software for such products as the Nokia 770, which should be on the market soon. It looks like a pretty cool toy, but although the screen is apparently big (800x480) and gorgeous, its battery life and local storage make it a poor choice for me even compared to today’s crop of PDAs (which it is not). I continue to wait for the ultimate handheld connected device.

As reported here at itT (and simultaneously at Postneo 2.0 ), the FCC has given its approval for the 770 to be sold in the U.S.

Among the documents filed with the FCC is a user's manual. And among the many warnings contained in this manual is the following:

"Parts of the device are magnetic. ... Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the device, because information stored on them may be erased."

Does this mean sticking a 770 in a purse or backpack next to a wallet might kerfluddle one's credit cards? How far apart do you have to be not be "near" -- that is, to be safe?

Or is this no more dangerous than a Palm, say?

Change seems imminent, with FCC acceptance as of last Friday -- see the front page here , where Reggie broke the news. Release is still listed as 3Q with no further details.

However, review units are being slotted, and one ought to hit the itT delivery slot in a couple weeks. Look for more than one review here, btw.

The countdown continues: 30 days till Sept 30, last day of 3Q.
