Or one that if I like something on my desktop; I can simply re-compile it in an SDK and put it on the phone. No coding knowledge even necessary there.

The fact that I can't set a different ringtone per contact? Lacking portrait mode? Waayyyyyy in the back of the list of a **** I need/want out of a "phone".

(this is why it is very accurate to call this a mobile computer; and not a "phone"; as the latter implies certain things this lacks - and this lacks it because a computer does not need it/them.)
Say all you want...but someone needs to explain to me why the N900 is listed under the "Phones" category rather than "Mini Laptop" on the Nokia website.

Most certainly nobody's life depended on it, but maybe their job continuity...

I certainly offer no excuses to why PR1.2 is delayed. I will actually laugh quite loudly if I see a MeeGo 1 announcement with full GUI released before PR1.2. That will just be comedic to me.
If I had to bet I would put my money on Meego launching first... so be prepared to laugh a lot!! Since the moment Nokia announced Meego they probably restructured Meego team this way:
- 99% of the developers to Meego
- 1% of the developers for Maemo 5 PR1.2, but unfortunately the guy is an intern and the university is assign too many homework lately... THIS is the reason PR1.2 is taking a lot of time!! We will have to wait until school break at least...

I'll grant you that the phone side of the N900 may not be the best option for vision impaired consumers, but really I don't know anyone that actually bothers to set per user ringtones other than to try the feature out.

I preferred it when you concentrated on Silent Heatsinks :

I said it was accurate to do so... not that that is actually what they did.

The N900 did seem to market itself as a smartphone. I personally consider it more of a mobile computer, that makes phone calls.

And also, if we continue to tell people that they should consider it that way - hopefully we can avoid people buying a device that may not quite be ready for what they want yet.

Even the Step 4/Never was not advertised much (if at all) - but it was said that way at a conference that only people that already knew that went to.

So yes, looking at this as more of a mobile tablet that includes the ability to call people once in a while - helps people, IMHO, to understand what they have. Now, if that's not for you (generic, not specific) then I'm not be a daft ***, or a jerk, or anything when I say: You probably, seriously, will be happier with an Android.

Android and iPhone are phones first, mini-computers second. This is the other way around. Decide which is most important for you and either sell the N900 (if you have one), don't buy one (if you're considering it), or do with the understanding that certain "cute" quirks are going to be missing.

As has been said many times: This is not the smartphone you're (generic, not specific) looking for. That's not being rude, it's being honest. I'm not saying people are too "stupid" to own an N900 - No. The N900 simply doesn't do some things, and the way things look: They aren't going to do them any time soon (if at all). If that's what's important to someone (and no judgement if that's the case, everyone is different and wants different things in their toys) - then the N900 is simply not for them.

No singular device makes everyone happy - this includes the iPhone. As popular as it is, there are many people that don't like it/complain about it/rant and rave about it on their iPhone forums. It's nothing new. Something will always be broken for somebody... so by trying to change the way someone looks at the N900 is not trying to "justify" the N900 for lacking something: It's getting them to understand that's simply not what it's for primarily.

That's not to say that if the N900 has everything you want, minus one thing - then you can decide: Stick with the N900 for all it's plusses and come here asking the community to help you make it do what it's missing... or if it's that important and you need it now: Get something that does that. You'll be happier, and ultimately - so will we (I'm not trying to be rude there, it's just a natural byproduct - if people get the devices they are happy with - happier atmosphere will follow).

Unfortunately, there are "some" things that are closed on the phone - specifically the phone parts - that we here can't help you with. You either get stuck living with it; or don't. The choice is, and always been, yours.

No, it is not. I apologize for being rude with you. I think it is the level of my frustration with the silence from Nokia.

Witter and Tweego (the later very nice) are incomplete yet, you need another plugin to simply attach a picture.

Can you tell me what is the other "phone, running android, with near identical hardware"?.

Thank you and I apologize again.

Transferred aggression never solved any problem

If you have a suggestion for witter then I beg you to go to the Witter thread and make it. I don't know too much about tweego so I'm not going to comment on it.

BTW, what mobile twitter app lets you upload a picture without using a plugin?
There is a twitpic plugin via pixelpipe. I think that method is far more intuitive because you can send the pictures when in the picture gallery rather .

A developer cannot satisfy a consumer's needs if he doesn't know them. dWould responds to every report and complaint/suggestions put on that thread.

Yup. Both have 5 MP camera (with Dual LED flash); both accept 32GB expansion cards (N900 gets the edge for having an addition 32GB onboard, but that's a minor thing), both use the exact same processor (OMAP 3430) and both have hardware keyboards.

So the choice between the two comes most from Maemo vs Android. The choice is yours there. (and getting around that awful Droid keyboard; but that's personal opinion )

Gravity on Symbian? I use the pixelpipe plugin to upload pics, but Gravity let's you pick a picture when you already typed a msg. I am not sure if it uses a plugin or not, but one does not have to leave the application to upload a picture.

Ah ok, I thought it was another device. I'll get this Android Milestone tomorrow, of course I'll miss the N900 keyboard and the Carl Zeiss lens ....but apparently we can not have all good stuff in only one place.
