Yeah, I was gonna make a comment about size too.

Would you still call it a 'mobile computer' when the thing sits on a strap on your wrist?

Granted you may be able to stream the video to external display (and other external i/o devices). But that's a whole different category of devices...

You can't play certain types of video without converting them. That's a problem that's across the board, but the N900 isn't the best - nor is it the worst.

Here's an example of the N900 having a slight problem with some video types. There are many other examples - like *.mkv and certain *.avi files - of where the N900 hiccups a bit on the video.

But at the same time - and to cut off the inevitable outcry - no phone/mobile computer/jesus device plays everything.

Possibly.

Though one can connect it to a big screen. Though not via e.g. mini DVI or HDMI.

And that's the other miss... composite video in a HDMI/DVI world. That's a step behind stuff that was known to be coming out or was already out during its release. No excuses, that's a step behind.

Well, it does depend what you aim to connect it to.

If it's a mobile computer, you'd want to be able to hook up a computer monitor, so DVI/HDMI is a definite win, and composite is seriously behind the times. (And I can confirm that 800x480 -> PAL -> 21.5" 1080p monitor looks just as ugly as it sounds... really wish it was HDMI when I tried that.)

But if it's a smartphone, you're more likely to be hooking it up to a pocket projector or video goggles, both of which are still more commonly and cheaply available with composite inputs to match the vast array of PMPs, DVD players, and smartphones already out there with composite video, and only the high-end models even have full VGA res, so it's not as though the video link is usually the limiting factor.

Oops, I don't think that's what the OP wanted to hear...

I aim to connect it to any TV in my house. I have none with RCA composite (red/right audio, white/left audio and yellow/video) - it's either HDMI, DVI or component (R, L, Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr).

I'm equally guilty it seems.

I think that all gadgets of this kind are becoming the same, iphone, ipad, tablets, mobile computer, notebooks, laptops, netbooks, PC...

The use that one can give to them is the same, the only thing that changes is size, and, maybe only for now, the power of the processor.

All of them are computers, only that some of them are more open, and others more user friendly.

Seriously why do people equate computer = PC?

A mobile computer.

You know.

Mobile... plus... Computer.

Is a Sharp Zaurus mobile? Yes. Is it a computer? Yes.

Is a TI-83 mobile? Yes. Is it a computer? Yes.

Is an iPhone mobile? Yes. Is it a computer? Yes.

Is a SGI Onyx 2 mobile? No. Is it a computer? Yes.

Is a PDP-11 mobile? No. Is it a computer? Yes.

Is a traffic light (I don't know the types of these things) mobile? No. Is it a computer? Yes.

So yes, a Samsung Galaxy S, every Nokia phone ever made, and even Nokia N900, they are... mobile computers...

All of them are computers, only that some of them are more open, and others more user friendly.
Actually, let me make this crystal clear... in order to read the Internet you have to use a computer. Hence, if you are reading this, you are using one.

Sounds like you're encouraging someone to commit a felony.
