Maybe it's just an educated guess - you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that a device like the RM-680 has a fairly short shelf life and the boat has already sailed on it. The market has moved on and Nokia can't be seen to stand still by actually launching the RM-680.

In terms of Nokia devices, the RM-680 was a cutting edge MeeGo device 6-9 months ago but it is now only a high-end Symbian device. Nokia will continue to face this type of problem while they have these continual delays to their hardware launches because the software is never ready. The N8 was delayed for something like 6 months as well, while they got Symbian^3 ready and they only just had the software ready for when it did eventually launch.

@Millhouse,
Well yes that's correct. I think instead of scrapping the N9 which had already tested and designed, why don't Nokia just release it with Symbian and rename it to the E7 pro a better version and faster for people who needs power.

That just my silly thought

Are you seriously suggesting that or do you live in fantasy world? Do you have any idea how testing and designing new devices goes? Itīs not some desktop pc where you can throw more powerful cpu or more ram and they just scale without any modifications to OS....yet.

Maybe they will, towards the end of 2011 or early 2012. As you say, all the development work has been done on it, so it would be silly to waste it...

For all I know it may even be possible to gut the RM-680 and replace the circuit board design with a new one using higher spec (ST Ericsson U8500?) components, but keep the exterior design more or less as-is. A significant part of the "cost" of developing a new design like RM-680 is going to be ensuring it doesn't fall apart, or failure of the complicated hinge mechanism.

Call me naiive, but Nokia must be past masters at designing a mobile phone circuit board, and if not they bl00dy well should be. This must be one of the lowest cost aspects of the design process these days.

Please tell me why Symbian can't be made to work on a Cortex-A8 based SoC.

Sure there will be some abstraction layer tweaks to get Symbian to run on it, but are you seriously suggesting it would be better to design a new device for Symbian than re-purpose one that had been designed for MeeGo? Give it another 12 months and Cortex-A8 hardware will be most definitely mid-range, exactly where Symbian is targeted.

I wonder who really cares that the prior iteration was killed.

To me, that's a good thing, potentially new hardware.

problem is new hardware == even more delay possibly relese 2012 and then the stockholders and Elop is so damn sick of the delays so they all say time to goto wp7 instead

I really starting to get pissed again of those delays and rumors. also the delays of E7 and updates of QT on symbian is bad for those who hopes in meego+symbian+oviappstore solution.

Come on man, the hardware in question was probably killed months ago, back when Ari Jaaksi left. I dare say, Eldar is late to this party. As for the new hardware, it was probably already in development if not done.

Indeed. Presumably Nokia have a "pipeline" of devices under constant development.

All that may have happened is that a finished but unreleased device (RM-680) has been skipped due to it missing it's "window of opportunity" and the next device along would now be moved up to replace it. This is how I would expect a nimble and adept company to operate, and the device that has been shelved could still be re-used in future for a lower tier product/OS in order to recoup some of the development cost/investment.

Of course, Nokia could still plough ahead with the now obsolete RM-680 design, but they'll be losing a lot more than they save as the mediocre processing platform could undermine the whole thrust of MeeGo.

Hopefully Elop will bring some sanity and rationalisation to the organisation and make it see sense - MeeGo will only succeed with top notch software AND top notch hardware, without compromise in either area. Sadly the RM-680 hardware doesn't cut it any more.

Hope not sanity like this [conjecture]
