Version 1.8.1:
as soon as i flag any of the option "720p" "480p" or "360p" into the play video options, i obtain the error:
"Video cannot be played"

What is interesting, I could have sworn I had version 1.7.? (can't remember the last digit), but I am on CSSU-Thumb (i.e. Testing) and according to http://maemo.org/packages/view/cutetube/, 1.7.? has never been published in extras-testing.
There seems to be no way to revert to 1.7, all older versions have been purged from the repositories.

I may not understand what you mean but cssu-testing/thumb doesn't mean you get applications from the extras-testing repos.
I am guessing you have an old extras-devel version.
Yes, the older versions have been removed automatically by repo management. I don't think this will fix the "Video cannot be played issue" anyway.

Some packages keep two or even more previous versions. Is it a per-package config?
1.7.9 worked fine for me, so I was hoping to roll back to that to fix the "Video cannot be played" error.
