And a fried N900 maybe

just kidding.
I read somewhere on forum that it doesnt matter what the dsp is clocked at beyond 600mhz it wont decode any faster beyond that.
Any one with more knowledge may help.

I believe that is true. I also believe that people like freemangordon (who did the 720p development) are knowldgeable and highly self-motivated. If there were reliable optimisations beyond what he has delivered, they would be done. What we have with the 720p libs, CSSU-testing (for 720p recording) and k-p (kernel-config load dsp) is the best one can do on the n900.

It is folks 2009 hardware trying to serve your 2013 needs.

freemangordan: would the device benefit from updated libav/ffmpeg for non hw accelerated files?

AFAIK, besides theora, everything is HW accelerated.

Re - DSP OC - I did experiments back when I was playing with DSP driver, the result - even if OC to 800MHz, C64x is not powerful enough to decode H264 medium/high profile. At least the examples I had here were still stuttering. And I am not talking about 720p resolutions. The same as on N9/50 with its 800(810?) DSP. The only thing that *may* benefit is recording, i.e. if OC to lets say 650 or 700 MHz, DSP would give stable 25 fps for 720p instead of now varying 23-25fps. But considering the tradeoff ( higher risk to fry the DSP, instability, much higher voltage needed which stresses the other parts too, etc), I considered to not allow anything beyond 600MHz. One of my devices was not able to go beyond 780MHz. So, as of now, I wouldn't change that limit . Feel free to make a patch and pester Pali if you feel he'll be less restrictive than me . Or just get the sourcecode, modify it and fry your device .

well iam not any developer but, i just asking this question. Is nokia n900 hardware is that weak that cant even record or play videos properly? or its software problem? iam sorry its just a noob question

It is not a software problem. It is hardware. The n900 today with various community dev contributions is a vastly more competent device than the one Nokia delivered. For example, the stock Nokia device was prone to slight pauses in recording video at stock (non-HD) resolution. However, it generally played non-HD videos well.

The n900 today can record at low-end HD, although the pause issue persists (some say it is due to limited RAM & io). The n900 today can play low-end HD, though after some time (and partic if you attempt too high-end HD) the dsp may become unstable and need a reboot. But it can do it.

Today I think owning and using the n900 is as much a matter of love and philosophy as it is one of owning a device (in the Android /IOS sense).

I understand your frustrations.
