Cases are abundance, even in three (four?) colors, and sellers claim they can ramp up production to a few 1000/week.

It's a bad news, I need a working phone for USA and Europe, but I don't want to sacrifice LTE.

If I neither care for US compatibility nor for LTE will it matter which of the two remaining modems is built into my device from a standpoint of ease of use (driver availablility), reliablility or anything else?

Not supporting all bands of all 'generations' in both Europe and USA doesn't yet mean it's not working at all when roaming. It just means you can't select from all available services when abroad. You still may be able to use UMTS or at least EDGE. Worst case handling at it's best: we might offer pluggable modem modules so you just swap the module when you travel. This however is absolutely not evaluated for feasibility yet, but it's on my list of things to look into. cheers jOERG

Technically all those should be compatible and drop-in replacements. We don't know about software compatibility, I.E. if fremantle dialer would work flawlessly with any or all of them.
We're just starting to evaluate our options :-)
