Why not?
No. Doesn't make much sense and probably would add further cost for something most wouldn't use.

what's not free though is voice directions. it will be like $100+ to activate it.
Hmmm... I think the whole routing part (not only voice prompts) is premium service... without activating (paying for license) all you can do is to browse maps.

(That's the reason I gave Gnuite a "please continue" to keep working on MaemoMapper few weeks ago... )

- Yes, with the keyboard in scrolling pages is sometimes a bit tricky, specially when the page is full of links. This can be solved in the software side, Hildon and the browser have some challenges ahead.
You might not be a gadget guy, but I seriously suggest you pick up an ipod touch or iphone and see how you can easily scroll with your finger, even with a screen full of links. It can be done, and done elegantly. Hopefully you guys over in Nokia do it right.

Think Nokia just bought some tourist maps with hefty price, so would expect them to try get some revenue with them

That's wonderful news! Nokia, would you please make CR-86 available for sale outside of the navkit now? I have money. You like money, yes? I will give you money.

@phi: by not being a gadget guy I mean that I haven't been playing with all the mobile devices with hardware qwerty kb out there, like the people who design such things at Nokia do. I do play with the iPhone / iPod Touch and of course the people in charge of designing the tablet Ui have plaid even more.

I have no hardware / UI design responsibilities and this is why I can be so explicitly dumb about this. My only point in the previous post was that scrolling efficiently web pages shouldn't rely ultimately on hardware keys (i.e. dpad) but on the touchscreen interface itself. The Hildon project is working on these issues, but the Hildon 2 that comes with Chinook/OS2008 hasn't got all the improvements yet.

Thanks for your input Reg...

... so I guess those of us who already paid $129 for Navicore are stuck with a limited distribution that hasn't had (and pro'ly wont have) any upgrades or sorely needed improvements.

The implication at the N800's intro was that Navicore was the direction Nokia was going with map software. All the press kits had screen shots showing a Navicore product....

Were we led down a dead end street?

What I want to know is the same old question. I know, it's an internet tablet. It's not a PDA. But will it provide enough minimal PDA functions, like audibly reminding me of my appointments, that it can be the only device I have to carry?

Better yet, could it turn out to live up to its potential as a general purpose, pocketable computer? That's what I'm really looking for: something that's not just cool, but actually usable. And useful.

Hmmm....me not likey the single tiny mini-SD slot.
I rather enjoy having several different WMs/firmwares all ready to go into the internal slot on separate SDHC cards.
Oh I'm sure it will be just a matter of time before someone hacks the default firmware to boot from that external mini-SD but the current capacity of mini-SD is, what? 4GB now? Why is Nokia going from a 16+ GB storage capacity system to only 4GB? Boy, that GPS chip and keyboard must really eat up space...not. I guess they sacrificed dual SDHC slots to trim off that 1 CM they made up in total size.
Shame. N800 is for hardcore hackers, N810 is for....everyone else? Too bad no one else really buys Nokia's Internet Tablets and really uses them on a daily basis except for the hackers out there.
My N95 with 4GB micro-SD and built-in aGPS works just fine.
I guess the N810 is being used internally inside Nokia to justify their recent purchase of a big GPS navigation company.
I'll hold off for the Wi-Max-enabled N900.
