Why are you implying that the N900 is the past, ite been out for a couple of months (in many cases, mainstream release ia few weeks ago!) - assuming the press releases are correct the next maemo device will be out in H2 - that could be up until December. The N900 being the flagship product/highend product will be a key part of the Nokia portfolio. Support of Maemo ovi maps navigation will benefit future sales - even as yet the N900 is in its infancy.

What I was trying to say (I should should have made it clearer) in the first sentence is that Nokia may be considering the N900 is in the past because the Nokia V.P. has said:
"N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap."

Before Nokia start talking about the next version of maemo they should be concentrating on the current version and supporting it. One obvious way is to release the free version of ovi maps on the n900.
If Nokida are "focusing" on the "next generation of maemo devices" then logically they are not focusing on the current version!
The opposite should have been said:
"Nokia are focusing on the current generation of maemo devices...
..eventually the next generation will get it and is on the roadmap"
This is what I meant by the n900 as the past and maemo 5 as legacy.
I personally do not believe that but Nokia seem to leaning this way.

The older symbian phone users must have been *****ing last month..."Great - just bought my Nxx and now Nokia bring out N900 and Maemo...won't be seeing any updates for my phone now"
Then today - "Oh free Maps - maybe Nokia does love its old customers still..."
On the N900 front - we've had two firmware updates already this month. How can that be lack of support?
The N900 has been marketed primarily towards developers rather than normal consumers. I wouldn't expect all the same things as standard consumers would get. Although to be honest I'd be surprised if we don't see Maps on the N900 soon.
