There used to be similarly long, dull debates about a "search first" culture. Or the lack of one. Or something. Right or wrong didn't matter, the existence of the debate was enought to hamper the community.
*grins* ... I think I've quite possibly been reading too many of those type of threads ... and maybe it'd just be a whole lot better for me if I let my eyes glaze over and want and played something fab on my shiny new n900 ...

... at the moment I feel like there's someone at the gates of maemo with an imaginary checklist waiting to see if I pass and can gain entry into the community! ... and yes, I know, that's stupid, and you're all lovely people, and one the n900 insanity passes things will be lovely again! ... thanks for making me giggle!

What, you? You're in. By virtue of your superior ability to, uh, be here. Anyway, welcome. Here's your accordion.

Your only test is linking your Talk.maemo.org account to your maemo.org profile. That one can be a doozy. Please give a shout should you run into trouble. Not that I have any ability to fix anything on the maemo.org profile side, mind you, but I can scratch my head and mutter a bit.

But yeah, it certainly isn't all about me, and I'm not the only one embracing eager newcomers. The numerous Maemo Greeters are doing a bang up job IMO... among many, many others.

With all of the overtures we senior "staff" and others make toward people like yourself, I'm still flummoxed by your statements. Honestly: what more do we need to do? What more can we do? Are we just not progressing fast enough? far enough?
... well, firstly, nobody has ever said "welcome" to me ... at least not that I'm aware of ... and that may well be my fault for not posting in the newbie thread (I'm bad, I've never once posted in a newbie thread!) but it doesn't hurt for people to acknowledge people with low post numbers out there in the regular bits of the forum ...

... secondly it's blooming scary trying to get involved in brainstorming, bugzilla, voting for suggestions, testing etc ... maybe I just haven't found the messages explaining any of them yet, but I really have no idea how to contribute to those without making a complete hash of it all ... are you trying to get people involved and am I just missing it all? Or is it just too stupidly hard to expect newbies to get involved?

... and thirdly at least when the n900 was first released, there was an assumption of knowledge that made a lot of posts by those trying to be really helpful completely useless for me coming from a numpty level of maemo style knowledge ... again, I should probably have made it clearer that I needed more complete instructions, but that assumption of knowledge made it hard for me to feel like anything but a complete fool with a phone that I was/am never going to understand ...

I don't think it's really a question of literally welcoming newbies (although that certainly doesn't hurt!) ... for me it's more a kind of bridging that's needed to ease me and other newbies into becoming a productive member of the community ... maybe it's just me missing it, maybe none of the other newbies care, but since you're after more productive community members to ease the burden of inane newbie questions maybe it is something that you want to address ...

Trust him on that. Oh, and he also has a fondness for trench coats. Yeah, yeah, he calls it a "duster"... but I know crazy when I see it.

I'm still trying to figure out what you're after. Random welcomes due simply to a low post count? I'm betting most assume you went through the "say hello" gate and got a greeting. No excuse, but please don't take that omission as a slight. There are a LOT of new people streaming in.

If I'm reading her (him, it, them... Emma) correctly I think the problem is centered around what is already in the works. A good document and design to get new users started... some form of flow chart/diagram/tour of Maemo and the different components. What each thing is for, why we have them, etc.

Some easy way of getting users familiar with the different parts of the community so when they read posts by people like me it doesn't float over their head with all the acronyms and references to fanciful tools that they've never heard of.

What he does is directly related to how you feel, as what he does (or evidently, what he tries to do) is to make you feel welcome.

So Texrat.... You apparently suck
*grins* ... see, I didn't know what I was picking at when I started this ... you on the other hand are just mean pointing out the poor boy's faults!

... I guess my thoughts on the matter are a bigger revelation than I thought they'd be ... it does seem to me however that you want helpful new community members, but aren't getting them in the numbers you'd like/are expecting ... so maybe something is going wrong somewhere, whether that's the problems I'm feeling or not is another question ...
