Where to start?
Nokia 770 Gets FCC Approval
http://www.internettablettalk.com/content/view/95/2/
Oh, right, I just linked to this page in the previous post (smack on the side of the head)! Well, it's big enough news, being the first external event we can tie to the release.

Reggie writes that he's been trying to pin down whether the unit in the US would have 802.11g as well as 802.11b, because for the longest time the nokiausa.com didn't say that (the nokia.com site did). When he saw yesterday that the information had changed, he thought to check the FCC data and bingo! he discovered the news.

Websites with interest in this sort of thing and presumably mainstream media are being sent review copies, so you should see lots of articles about this soon.

Hey, what about developers? When are they getting devices?

Nokia 770 Gains FCC Approval

>>I had completely missed this, but apparently the Nokia 770 was approved by the FCC on Friday. Thanks for the heads up, Koen! Everyone in #maemo is drooling right about now.
Matt Croydon was an early poster on this news, with links to specific documents part of the FCC submission, such as the user manual.

Of course, Planet Maemo had picked it up, and Nokia 770 blog chimed in, with some follow-up this morning about review copies being sent out. And Teleread ran a blurb about it, with a graphic taken from the user manual. (Hey! I wrote it. I know where it came from.)

Mobile Burn. Didn't say how it stumbled across the news . . .

At pdaology. Credits Mobile Burn. Hey, it's tagged under mobile phone! Not yet, eh? Edited to add -- Wait! I guess Minisip means VoIP is on-hand now, not later. My bad!

Expect we'll start to see MSM picking it up now, which follows sites like Mobile Burn.

A whole blog by Jussi Kukkonen on his efforts to port the game Frozen Bubble. Latest entry is on how to fit the game to the 770's landscape orientation when it's a portrait game.

>>Another handheld device I'm tracking is the Nokia 770 mini-tablet - a Wifi enabled handheld with a browser which will play Flash, thus enabling low cost learning games development.

Ambient Connection is the website, games the focus it seems (or at least of this entry).

This report may have something to do with the video capabilities of the 770.

Mike's got bigger visions in sight and he advised us he won't be returning to write this blog.

Actually I predict he won't be able to go cold turkey, and we'll see sporadic contributions from him. (This is a safe prediction, because he made it first.)

He'll give us another full report of the 770 in the near future. Hey, Fondling the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is what clued in most people to the potential of this device!

That and his incredible posts in this ersatz blog and its predecessor location.

Thank you, Mike. You were the first site I turned to every morning -- and then throughout the day to get my fix on 770 info.

What Roger said.

My last planned writing in the handheld field will be a review of the 770.

Maybe the title of this should now be changed, dropping my name.

Hey, when did this show up on the application page of the wiki?

Maemo wiki:
wlan

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/Applicati...9a06fe349a8ddd
>>Let you watch TV everywhere in your wlan by using a special daemon which controls your dvb-card.

Cool pic. I guess that means you need a card in a PC on your network to received digital broadcasts, too.

Edited to add --
Hey, see the links to two of the many articles about Nokia pushing Mobile TV services in the next post.

Nokia 770 Recieves [sic] FCC Approval

Nothing new here, but clearly written from his own perspective and not just parroting what others have said.

And these strangely coincidental reports, among others, of Nokia's TV push:
SymbianOne:
Astro, Maxis & Nokia Showcase Live Mobile TV Broadcasting over DVB-H Technology:

>>Malaysia's leading cross-media operator Astro, together with ... global mobile device maker Nokia jointly showcased a live demonstration of Mobile TV Broadcasting ... in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
>>>The showcase used the new Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld (DVB-H) technology standard now undergoing extensive field trials in Europe, the USA and in other parts of Asia.

>>A trial of the [mobile TV] service ... earlier this year proved very popular, with some 58 per cent of participants saying that they believed that Mobile TV would be popular.
Makes me think that wlan app (in previous post) might be sponsored by "a telecommunications company based in Helsinki."

Still eagerly awaiting some news. But release is still listed as 3Q with no further details.

The countdown continues: 28 days till Sept 30, last day of 3Q.

And, hey, it's been one week since the FCC approved the 770, and Nokia USA still reports:
The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC")*
Get with the act, guys!

Let's hope the day's news are real news. But a rehash to start --

Gizmodo:
Nokia 770 Gets FCC Nod

http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/nokia...nod-123563.php
>>The 770 would be perfect as a coffee-table type appliance for quick Internet browsing while you’re watching TV, or if you prefer, while you’re on the toilet. And, just for everyone keeping score at home, it already plays Doom.

At last, somebody who doesn't use euphemisms, like Bill Gates did talking about people awkwardly trying to open their laptops in elevators. Come on, Bill, it was the men's room, wasn't it.

Anyway, the coffee table reference in this report makes me think this was rewritten from Mobile Scraper. Or are they both referring to an unreferenced ur-text? At any rate, they properly credit Reggie and itT for bringing their attention to Doom.

And some nice, informed speculation --
Blogzilla:
Mini Mozilla accelera la marcia [ Mozilla Minimo accelerates the march]

http://blogzilla.altervista.org/2005...la-marcia.html
>>The rapidity with which the development of Minimo is proceeding seems to strengthen the hypothesis that behind its plan hides one sponsor of exception like Nokia. According to some voices, in fact, the giant of the telefonini would be interested in the small browser of Mozilla house for its Internet Tablet. (Translation by Babelfish.)

There's apparently an aggressive development roadmap that's been mapped out for the Mozilla Minimo browser project this fall. It hasn't escaped people's attention that Minimo is the GPE browser, and GPE is running on our Internet Tablet platform. Is Nokia funding this push? Who would be surprised if they were?

Edited later to add --
askmeanything.org
http://www.daltonrooney.com/ask/index.php?p=24
>>(I) find the concept behind the Windows Tablet PC platform quite interesting. I think that, someday in the future, more and more computers will have built in touch screen interfaces that allow us to work more directly with the computer. In fact, I think the Nokia 770 is a great example of just such a device, and I can’t wait to buy one. It’s small, extremely portable and easy to use, with integrated wifi, web browsing, email and IM. Add in the built-in expandability to do a lot more because of its Linux architecture, and I suspect that it will be the perfect addition to many connected homes.

daltonrooney.com:
Askmeanything.org makes the front page!

http://www.daltonrooney.com/?p=588
Same guy, same content, different page.

Actually, this post is really about why his TabletPC didn't cut it. And there's a lesson here. BTW, his tablet weighed 5 pounds. No wonder it didn't fit in his lifestyle. Or anyone's.

Sounds like these guys just heard of the 770 for the first time.
