A bit of old post so sorry for the bump. You can still access the symbols and such, if you press Fn+Ctrl from the hardware-keyboard. Don't know what I'm talking about? Here's a pic:

Those keys are on the far-left side of the N900.

To continue on this topic: Would it be possible to have both landscape and portrait keyboard? Switching between these could be made either by widget or dropdown menu button (like with qwerty12's keyboard layout switcher) or ideally automatically (after all, the phone knows in which direction it is held because it can rotate some applications).

(sorry, I have read the topic in small bits so I can't remember if this subject is already covered )

There is a portrait keyboard, it just isn't the same one as comes programmed by default. There's also both commands and packaged widgets (I think) earlier in this thread for switching between one keyboard and the other.

The main point right now is this vkb isn't even that finished yet. As you could've noticed from the screen shot, if this stuff gets finished/updated any time soon, we will have a damn workable keyboard for both portrait and landscape.

I would really discourage you from driving and typing at the same time!

Walking or standing on the bus while typing, however, is a joy with the new portrait keyboard (even if it is not finished yet).

Check out the first post.

I would really like to have a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode as well, like the one you find in Opera Mobile. Kudos to w00t and others for finding this and giving us the oppurtunity to test it out!

Is the QWERTY keyboard a part of this yet? I can't find any sort of settings for the app.

hmmm.....i didnt mean am texting all the time when am driving....

But at some times like when we need to type a "OK" or "Call u later","in 5 mins" kind of very short msgs(which i dont think will effect our driving).....a portrait keyboard is very useful...

Using the phone always in landscape mode is also a problem for many users....

Hey but this in n900/maemo....we can do any thing right???
