But, that is all beside the point, because the main question is if MeeGo will offer the N900 user advantages over Maemo 5 that will make it worthwhile. That right now is still uncertain. As others have said from the beginning, unless we get an official release from Nokia for the N900 (unlikely), we will likely lose all of the closed-source applications Maemo currently offers. The question is, will there be enough from the MeeGo community to replace that? Time will tell. Same goes with MeeGo's performance on N900 hardware.

I'm not sure what you thought you were getting promised by Nokia, but most of us at the time of release could read the tea leaves that the N900 probably would have a relatively short lifespan with Maemo 6 (at the time) on the horizon. Many of us knew that there was no guarantee that the N900 would get an OS refresh even before MeeGo and before Nokia changed CEOs and changed plans accordingly.

Yet, I still bought because I felt the phone fit my needs, and it continues to fill those needs quite well. I'm just glad that a lot of the tablet know-how of Maemo won't be lost because of corporate interests. I have hope for MeeGo, not for my current phone, but potentially a phone (or tablet) in the future, and not necessarily by Nokia.
Interesting points there and yes you hit the nail spot on too about Nokia and closed apps, your now making the picture clear and not many people realise the closed components will not exsist on the adaption of MeeGo but having said that, what was really substantial in any part of Maemo because all i saw was half working anything so i would hope MeeGo brings with it some half decent apps.

What i thought i would get and what we all got was a total shambles in my view because the Maemo os was half baked, shockingly half baked, but like many others we listened to the hype about the so called "flagship" the N900 was supposed to be and jumped in before it got proper reviews, my wrong doing there.

I guess the reason we have so many argumentative debates on this forum is because of the many people that feel totally let down but it is not finished yet by a long shot as we are now finding out, just as long as we do not build our hopes too high we will be pleasantly suprised by the MeeGo efforts.

Incidently and although off topic, after over a year of people making Maemo a better place to work with, some of the apps are bloody fantastic and right now you know Maemo is not so bad as long as you take care what you install.

All in all the MeeGo adaption to replace Maemo will have to go some i tell you because i am no way in a hurry to get rid of Maemo thats for sure.

LOL! What a numpty. All you have done is copy and paste some article and posted it here, claiming you 'know what you're talking about'

You can't even do that right. It's more than a year old.

Seriously, are you an escapee from a mental institution?

First you say that Meego is vaporware, quoting and posting up a year old article. Then you acknowledge it's existence and in one post mention it's 10 year history which pretty much nullifies the "vaporware" comment.

Next you say Maemo is "half baked", "unfinished" and you're pretty fed up with up.

Now you post this, saying you are "in no way in a hurry to get rid of Maemo"

These posts are inconsistent and defy logic. Are you on a wind up? Does the medication you take change your personality in any way? Sometimes I feel like I'm reading posts from 2 or 3 different people, all posting under the abill_uk account.

Total shambles? I disagree with that. Even when it was released it was very functional. Certainly there were features people wanted that weren't there and in some cases still aren't, but I'd hardly call it "shambles" or "half-baked".

Also, if you thought that the N900 was supposed to be the flagship phone, that's your ignorance talking. Nokia never marketed it as a flagship phone anywhere. The N97 was always their flagship phone.

Apologies if this is off topic but does anyone have any experiences with this meego release they'd care to share? Or shall I come back later when you've all finished pulling each others hair?

I should have thought of that. It IS consistent with the available data.

Google is fully capable of regurgitating all sorts of garbage. The beauty of an open internet.

I do this really weird thing called fact-checking. I'm hoping it will catch on.
