I don't use my real data in any service with a bad privacy policy. I removed most of my data from facebook (wich policy I didn't accept until they changed it because lot of complaints). And I don't use untrusted facebook aplications (wich are the most of them XD). Well, I use paypal, who now give your data to a lot of financial companies :S

Whatsapp's privacy policy is the worst I saw. It can even change without notice the users (that's illegal in my country, Spain) , and it is considered accepted if the user continue using it after the change. They say that the user is responsible of re-reading from time to time their privacy policy and search for changes from the older one. wtf?

In PeterBornx Java Port I used a false IMEI and a alias phone number from fonyou.com to my real number. In Yappari I have to use my real IMEI but I continue using not my real number.

I tried to register a completely false phone number but the free SMS services I tried didn't work.

You can do that in Peterbjornx Java port. (works in N900 and PC and anywhere where you can run a .jar).

In Yappari just contacts with international prefix are added to your contact list.

But two of them will add synchronization with Whatsapp servers.

You can second my wazaap issue asking for an option to not sync: https://github.com/tgalal/wazapp/issues/17

By the way, you don't get any contacts in wazaap contacts list maybe because you need to add international prefix to all of them. Thats a need of whatsapp protocol.

Okay honestly, its still a pointless discussion, if the policy and terms didn't apply to the EU's strict privacy laws, then WhatsApp WOULDNT BE IN THE EU!

But surprise surprise, it is, meaning it passed the EU's prying eye with no issues.

As for conversation and data, you do realise the all texts/ims/facebook chats/skypes/everything is monitored and if need be can be accessed by anybody with authority to do so such as Intelligence Agencies or Local Police with warrants as well as other random agencies.

Go start a thread in the off-topic section about how you hate that all your data is being 'stolen' It is a price we have to pay to use technology, its not exactly like they can ruin your life, its a phone number :P

If you don't understand a basic IM app like this, you should put down your current phone, and go get a Nokia 3310..

How about you get off your butt and google what the app is.. Instead of expecting somebody here to spoon feed you..

ALSO compared to using normal 3G for Data, WiFi actually uses much less power when left on in the same manner due to a number of power saving methods built into the protocols.. Don't post about things you clearly don't understand.

No, they don't and it isn't. Well, maybe now they do, after I inadvertently stumbled into this. Apparently none of my existing contacts use Whatsapp, so thats why I see "No contacts yet. Try to resync". I wanted to try out this app after all the hype around here to see if I can suggest it to some close friends as SMS or IM substitute. I expected to be able to add those friends manually.

Take your non relevance to a place where it is wanted, your issue is with how WhatsApp works, nothing to do with Wazapp!
OK, I misunderstood the underlying technology and I know Wazapp is simply relying on the Whatsapp platform. But that's not the point.

What I don't understand is what you all get up in a huffy about someone asking for proper disclosure. I'm not saying the app shouldn't do what it does. I'm not trying to piss on your parade. All I'm saying is, include a dialog that says
"Running this app will upload your phone book to Whatsapp servers. Tap to agree."
Not something buried in 10 pages of "Terms & Conditions" legalese.

Is that too much to ask? Would it make the app any less useful for you guys? You are basically arguing "No, we MUST do this sneakily under the hood, without telling the user. We will absolutely not be upfront about it."
Why?

Maybe it would give some people pause and lead them to not sign up. But this is a 3rd-party app - tgalal, why do you care? You're not making any money from people using or not using the Whatsapp platform via your app. So what if a few drop out?

I actually did some digging and found Path did a similar thing not too long ago and they ended up apologizing profusely:
http://blog.path.com/post/17274932484/we-are-sorry

That story actually caused quite a bit of uproar and a lot of other companies got caught up in it and changed their policies:
http://allthingsd.com/20120215/follo...up-their-acts/

Finally, even Apple now requires apps to get explicit permission before accessing contact data:
http://allthingsd.com/20120215/apple...er-permission/
Say what you want about Apple and the iPhone, but in this case, why not follow that example?

Completely defeats the point of the app, if this is the functions you want, go use Skype/MSN/FB Chat/Other Traditional IM...

The main point of this app is to take that extra step of having to manually type in an email or username or even a PIN out of the equation, and allow your phonebook contacts to be straight away available to chat to.

Its how the app functions, honestly if you don't like the way it functions and you want to add friends manually, then use the MANY alternatives that function that way.

mämo and malkavian, this is the way the official app works, if you have a problem then go to whatsapp, the aim of this app is only to replicate an already existing app.
