The Capt'n's suggestions are brilliant, as usual. 
+1 on everything there, especially the colour wheel idea. Where is the camera button located, though? Is this going to be another right/left hand debate?

The camera button would actually be easier for lefties. It's located at the top right of the device. So if you're holding the device landscape, then you could press the button with your right hand index finger (if you're a lefty), or your left hand ring finger (if you're a righty).
Hopefully, the button is easy to press!
Of course, any modifier would do. Even covering the proximity sensor, or one of the keypad keys. I figured the camera button would be the most convenient given the options.

Double tap to drag would be easier to implement, probably. (I have not used Xournal yet, so I am using my imagination here).

please don't hijack the camera button though.
its used for the camera and a higher priority than any single application.

I would like to see a tournament match:
anidel on Xournal vs. lcuk on liqsketch!
Draw at 30 paces!
Only problem is that I like both apps and developers, so it couldn't be a fight to the death.

Usually you open the camera slider and the Camera app pops up.
If you leave the slider open and close the Camera app, you can run it again by either tapping on its icon or press the camera button.
So, I won't use it in Xournal as a modifier.
I MIGHT be using it when the user wants to annotate a snapshot of the screen.
But it'd be best if a snapshot application would come out and have a Send To option.
EDIT: btw, I like the idea of the modifier for panning ( I personally use the Win key on my keyboard to move a window on my desktop around ), but I don't think it makes much sense on the N900 unfortunately (very few people, I believe, will use Xournal with the keyboard slide open).

I met with anidel in London and we got on great - i think xournal is an amazing polished app and think theres many collaborative points we can work together on in future.
finding out now he has a private sketch format that isn't pdf is certainly interesting - im wondering whether addition of liqsketch support and vice versa would be a good thing
to be able to select the quick drawn liqsketches and drop them directly onto xournal as stamps would be an interesting project.
no doubt we will talk more at the summit

app developers should just leave it as it is unless they are replacing the camera functionality itself.
photos in pdf are hurtful and puppies die everyday because people try.
