β, maybe? As close as the N810 and N810WE are, there shouldn't be any big surprises; it's been in closed β a while, so a public β for N810s, at least, looks quite reasonable for Q2.

If I was being grumpy, I'd say a public beta doesn't really count as a release.

That's what they did with the OS2008 release, though, in response to developers saying "hang on, we want to test our apps on the devices we've got [N800] before the new device and OS come out".

Which is really sane, though there should be much less need now. I'm envisioning it as a possible way of keeping their Q2 commitment without finalizing the N810WE's factory firmware.

As far as I see os2008 is already a public beta, and releasing Diablo with the current version of Modest would be a huge mistake.

OK, but there's almost 2 months left before the end of Q2, so one wouldn't expect the current version of Modest to be current then.

(I'd say, by the way, that it's not a beta if it's shipping on production devices. At that point, if it's bad, it's just bad.)

So, either you're wrong, the online retailers are wrong, or the supposition about the synergy of the Diablo/N810W release dates are wrong.

Dug out the original press release:

So, if I can't update my N810 to Diablo before CoB 30th June 2008, the Q2 deadline is missed :-)

Hey! I trademarked that schtick. You owe me... hmm, what do you guys have lying around over in Building 4?

As for Diablo... well, I'm officially testing certain builds now, so let the bribes begin!

Wreckage from an alien craft which crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, perhaps?

On the one hand, it's promising that it's progressing; on the other, it's disappointing that Nokia still keep so many cards so close to its chest, when there are legions of people who have the skills and inclination to do careful testing in exchange for early access. (I'd like to advocate a public beta, but we know how well that goes with inexperienced people trying things they shouldn't, and ill-advised people repeating things they don't understand)

The backlash from idiots with a poor understanding of the term 'beta' is a force to be reckoned with.

Here's a prime example.

In all fairness, this doesn't say beta, but it says:
This is really in testing phase, and I think the bugs are all out, but I want to have a few people test on other cards.
Testing phase, think all the bugs are out... if you're not Google, that means the same thing...

It's sad.
