Cant believe you guys are still going

If I'm reading her (him, it, them... Emma) correctly I think the problem is centered around what is already in the works. A good document and design to get new users started... some form of flow chart/diagram/tour of Maemo and the different components. What each thing is for, why we have them, etc.
Excellent Idea! That would certainly make access for beginners easier!

Some easy way of getting users familiar with the different parts of the community so when they read posts by people like me it doesn't float over their head with all the acronyms and references to fanciful tools that they've never heard of.
... her/Emma ... and sounds about right!

"there seems to be little appreciation for new members trying to help and little effort made by the established community to enable them to do so effectively ..."

LoL. I think its pretty cool that your openly discussing this kind of stuff - its what being part of an open community is about.

I think what EmmaGx is getting at is that you seem like a bunch of geeks who suddenly became the popular kids.

Everyone seems confused and a bit annoyed about whether to relax and enjoy it or to clam up and wait for it to go away.

The existing strength of the community seems to be in its ability to persevere with independent development of 'heritage' devices. An emerging strength is in guiding future maemo development now the platform has gone more mainstream.

How should a geek deal with sudden popularity?

the OP is wrong SO wrong. Complain, air your issues, dont hold them back. Of course dont share any little niggle but if there is an issue let it be known. How else are these issues going to be fixed??

In addition - his comment - "dont complain, you might put people off buying one." Good! If we are having such issues, then perhaps people need to knwo of them rather than buy a device and be dissapointed.

the N900 is a great device, but we all now the software is sub par. Let Nokia know is just isnt on - stop releasing bugging undertested prodcuts. The N900 could be so good - releasing it unfinished was a very poor move for Nokia and the consumers...and yet Nokia do it again...and again...and again. Why? Because us mugs continually buy this!

LET YOUR VIEWS BE KNOWN.

N95 - MASSIVELY buggy on release
N96 - MASSIVELY buggy on release
N97 - MASSIVELY buggy on release

remember this.

Nokia - bloody change.

Woo! Covered in the previous post. Yeah!

I don't think it's really a question of literally welcoming newbies (although that certainly doesn't hurt!) ... for me it's more a kind of bridging that's needed to ease me and other newbies into becoming a productive member of the community ...
Please talk with RevdKathy. This is her bailiwick. It's not that the community hasn't wanted to help newcomers in the ways you'd like, but it can be just too easy to not see those needs when you're in already. Please, please stick around, ask questions, and point out where there are missing bits that will help you, and others, understand how to get more involved. And don't be bashful about speaking up when someone has made an attempt to help, but missed in terms of level or detail. In my experience, if you politely tell someone here you didn't understand step 4 or have no idea what a "foobar" is, they'll happily explain further.

Neil here from the uk, I just wanted to say that's the most entertaining 'thread' I've read for . . . well. . . a long time. I just wanted to say as a 'noob' I really do appreciate what goes on in this forum and the hard work many people contribute. I'm not a geek but I probably know more about this 'Internet Tablet with phone features' than any phone I've owned before and alot of that is down to this forum and in turn that motivates me to contribute in some way. I'm not sure where I'm going with this now so I'll shut up.
