alot of joysticks may have had more than one fire button next to each other but they did they same thing as the other
This isent true. a game like Mortal Kombat used 2 diffrent joystick buttons. one where you kick and one where punch...

Actuelly right now, both normal fire button and alternative fire button is mapped to space... in games where 2 buttons is required, you can see it registers both buttons, in mortal kombat it randomly either kicks or punches when pressing space, others reported simular issues with other games.

Well: $dff00c,$dff00d controls joysticks.
To read it:

Yes, OPTIONAL means a manufacturer can do it with only one button, but system read TWO BUTTONS.
But if anyone wants more discussion, ok...

I had one joystick with 2 buttons but they both did the same thing... in fact you usually struggle to use both buttons anyway, not that you ever really needed to, because of the way you hold it. Stick in one hand and the control in the other and one of the thumbs to hit the button depending on where it was.

Yes, I coded joysticks main time to perform the same action when pressed... but assigning the same function for both data reads, fire0 and fire1 ("OR" masked read)

Is anyone thinking that mouse right click = joystick secondary fire? i know mouse left click = joystick primary fire.

Joysticks and mouses are the same hardware "ports".
I don't remember clearly... the challenge was to read $dff00c "as a mouse", it is a little tricky when trying to calculate movement-offset of mouse... but OMG, too many years!

personally I only remember there being 1 joystick button on all the joysticks I owned but looking at the pin out of the D9 connector it does appear to support 2 independant buttons.

Yep definately 1 button.

But it wouldn't hurt to have a 2nd configurable button i am sure the odd joystick game used space bar (grenades etc).

EDIT

or is it spelt Definitely.....hmmmmmmmmm

Stop saying theres only 1 button My joystick had 2, and both worked independently of each other.. just like the mouse has 2 buttons on same port
