how to convince people thats its a mobile computer?
open a lot of programs until the device gets slower and slower... thats what computer do when overloaded

I decided to get Nokia N900 over the iphone, HTC, Androids and other (Nokia) smartphones simply because it's different from 'everyone else'. We are highly unique individuals and we don't compromise!

While it may not be the most powerful device (today), I feel confident using it for my phone and basic computing/multimedia/internet tasks, and i'm happy using the features that the community has developed (and are still developing).

If you are still doubtful...
- it's too bulky --- it's built solid
- it's too heavy --- you want to compare Mont Blanc with cheap plastic pens?
- the screen's too small --- try holding an ipad over your ear in Starbucks
- lousy battery life --- still better than my laptops

Only problem I have is unable to use 3G video call (can someone help me here?)

I think when you turn these devices on for the first time, their pre-configured differences tell the story best. For better or for worse, no other smartphone is more ready out-of-the-box to be a general computing device than the n900. So in my opinion, the onus is on others to convince people why their smartphone is more of a general computing device. I mean really, isn't that why you come to tmo, to read about other people's Android and iOS circus acts?

But when in doubt, always answer a question with a question.

Honestly, someone might have already said this, but why do you feel like you have to convince other people that the "N900 is a mobile computer"? Apart from maybe temporary self-gratification, I don't think there is too much to gain from it (unless of course you thrive off that temporary self-gratifying high, which I guess can become addicting). Just use and enjoy your device, that's the most convincing tactic.

I'll answer your question anyway.

It all starts with the ease of gaining root. The next step is the ease at which you have access to the rest of the OS and hardware. Python, for instance, will load a dynamic library for you, and sudo rm will help you disable cherry. Now, the device is yours. I think.
