One important issue to consider is that, by reducing functionality and locking down things like multi-tasking, Apple got focus on their innovative UI.

I am not an iPhone fan, but I must admit their user interface was far more intuitive for non-IT folks, and it is still hard to beat in this aspect. Nevertheless, I still don't recommend mobiles like N900, Android or iPhone to any friend/family who doesn't have basic computer knowledge. Even someone with basic knowledge sometimes does not have skills to do a simple software installation, so there is a lot to improve in the UI area if mobiles vendors want to increase their sales.

I'm unfamilar with other platforms regarding the bug issue. Does Android and iPhone OS publicly list all the bug fixes and bugs in the system?
Hmmm...Possibly for Android, unlikely for Apple. Anyone have any actual data on this (not anecdotal evidence)?

Yes, actually it is quite common.

Toyota may have drawn the media spotlight, but they're not the only company who has been knowingly shipping vehicles with unintended acceleration problems, for instance.

Jumping to another field, there are plenty of medication commercials on television, ones that often mention death in their laundry lists of super fun possible side effects. So, not only is death acceptable as a possible side effect of a medication, it's such a minor concern to consumers that having it mentioned doesn't ruin the effectiveness of the ad.

The trick is not to make it immediately to the consumer. o.O

It's kind of hard to imagine any simpler 'smartphone' than the iphone.. program installs\purchases are truly a one-tap operation from the built in appstore application. Perhaps just the initial setup (mail server settings, wifi connectivity, whatnot). But I'm already thinking of buying my mom an ipad w/ a keyboard dock. She's the least technical person I know and I think she'd do just fine with the iPad (browsing, emails, IM, music and video playback, photo viewing, etc)

@Laughing Man:

Apple release simplified changelogs which don't list 100% of the fixes\additions...

On major OS update, they release a marketing page for it -.-

First post? No one's going to believe that, what a waste of bandwidth and registration time.
