Will the user be able to install a custom kernel on the consumer device?

Why would the N9/50 be worthless to me w/o a hardware keyboard?
Because of MeeGo. MeeGo feels like a hybrid son of a tablet & phone UI. I put the latet DE on my N900 and i cant see myself using it with a keyboard! plain & simple.

I feel like too many of you has been attached to the "White Noise" around the device. like its camera or the gestures mechanism. But fail to see the fact that people who prepare to pay large sums of money on a device like this also wants it to help them with their work.
For example, i know quite a few buisnessmen who switched their Iphone4 with an E7 and they are the happiest people now..For those who need to constantly type memos\notes\messages ect..that keyboard is a must. Besides for all of us who need something 'extra' the E7 is not enough.

It could be very funny if we wont be able to have it "all". Both the ability to work with the open system that it is meego and to have that keyboard.

To finalize the video rumors, only one animation-shot looks to be shopped, meaning the one with different back cover and back layout. It seems to be floating around in zero gravity, most likely a 3D model. Shown on this and this pic. The 3d model is very likely made in another state of development/production, meaning it can vary by looks from the final release. That could explain the differences. In the other pics, the phone was either held by a hand or on some sort of stand for filming/photographing purposes. (out of camera reach obviously) If the other shots were also shopped, it must have been on a pixelated level with very high detail, wich seems too obscure to be true for me. Especially in some shots.

They will release one single Meego device this year. I'm still convinced this is one with a keyboard. Why? Firstly this is a successor of the N900, and the previous models, all wich have HW keyboard. Second, they release it almoast 2 years after the N900, and probably targeted it to be a viable replacement for the N900, since the Maemo5 powered device caught a decent audience and their owners look for such a replacement.

Think about the fact that the N900 is also a development device for QT and such, also the previous models. They had developer devices ready some time before the N900 was released for consumers, mainly for software reasons (maemo5 not stable enaugh for consumers, developers could prepare software for when it was released to the public) and the device was still the same hardware-wise when it was released. Harmattan/Meego isn't finalized either for consumers whilse the hardware is, hmm deja vu?

Also, we have seen proof and hints from officials about the one with qwerty. FCC, the video, officials saying to watch out for 'Jesse's girl' where nothing was shown about one sans qwerty and probably forgetting some other sources. This model is obviously the first in the pipeline, and thus the first to be released IMHO. And all the fanfare like the teaser-video and such make no sense for a device that is developers-only. Sound more likely for it to be for developers as well as consumers later on. Since they are probably not making tonnes of these (geez I hope I'm wrong) why waste some more millions on designing and manufacturing a (completely) different type of phone HW-wise wich also won't make it to millions of users.

For a "future disruption", this device is probably not meant to sell to the large masses so why make a touch-only one? We have seen no liable evidence that the keyboardless N9 is real. Maybe in 2012, but I don't recall to have heard plans for the release of another model after this one. If I might take an educated guess the people interested in this MeeGo phone would like a qwerty variant some more than one without. I only see this happen if this Meego phone opens doors for larger scale releases. Referring to N8 and E7, wich are somewhat comparable, but also more widely sold and marketed. Someone claimed to have a N9 without keyboard some pages ago.. I have it too, but could only fiddle with it in my dreams, so sorry no proof for you guys!

Again I could be wrong but then it woulden't make much sense..
In my opinion, the keyboard N9 was produced in December, but scrapped at the last minute, for whatever reason (flimsy hinge, MeeGo not ready,...). Because of that, Nokia has a significant amount stockpiled. The video had already been produced back then and was now "leaked" to create excitement for the phone before it is distributed at the MeeGo conference.

However, this does not mean that the conference will be the only place to get it. It might be available if you register as a developper or something of the sort. In that case, I personally will wait until I see what the specs on the keyboardless version are before making a decision. Like many others here, I hate those on-screen keyboards, so I'd probably get the kb one, but I'd still like to see what the other has to offer.

So hw wise, it's only competitve? Not surpassing it anywhere?

I know it's a different OS but still want 2011+ hardware...
Can't get into specifics but it will be better than the hardware on the dev phone. Everything is nice and smooth.

The 3D rendering, the one with the with cover, is obvioulsy a QWERTY device. But the one shown in hand, looks like it is the N9 proto leaked ages ago. It have a black over just like the old proto, and a slit that seems to be the separation for the screen slider.

I don't doubt there will be a keyboard-less device. But the video itself doesn't add evidence to it - the video shown 2 QWERTY devices.
beg to differ...
the video is / was some 52 seconds long, the phone being visible barely half of the time and even then under changing light conditions, for a couple seconds at most every now & then. difficult to make out anything, except that it had a keyboard, a camera with Carl Zeiss optics.
maybe the device will be available in different colours and the video showed a couple of them (black, grey, i think); maybe there'll even be a pink one (but they choose not to show it in the video, thankfully)
not sure it is a base for claiming there were different models.

N8 is 12.9 mm, E7 is 13.6 mm
both are thicker the rotten iPotatos 4 which is only 9.6 or so.
thus, neither is slim by what market sees (& likes) as slim but both are slimmer then the N900 which is 18 or even nearly 20 mm (w/ the camera lens protruding)

don't go bidding against me....I'll dig around for coins for a long time if I can get the keyboard one rather than a keyboardless one.

in fact I could use 2 keyboard equipped ones....for my wife and I, so back off :P

All in all I bought 11 N900's, 3 in own use. Initially the reason was that they had a keyboard and I was shopping around for some HTC before I came across the N900, 2 months before it came out and I decided to wait for it.

I still want a HW keyboard. If I can't get a Maemo/Meego replacement for my N900 with one, then I'll have to find a device with another OS that has one.

if it isn't, then Maemo / MeeGo running on the RM-680 will be no better then iOS, would it?
strikes me as a very long stretch from the N900, doesn't it?
or even Symbian^3 devices.
even though that's what's awaiting us w/ Wx NOKIA devices, seems like an early departure from old habits.
and make darn sure no die hard NOKIAn would even want one.
NOKIA has hard enough a time keeping its fan under its banner(s), do they need to scare them away?

unfortunately Nokia has ambitions to sell commercially successful quantities of its smartphones, so it does in fact matter because that means competing with manufactures who do make stuff pretty so as to appeal to average joe.
