Canonical is a company full of geeks and hackers, most of us are very security and privacy conscious, and most of us use Ubuntu every day ourselves. We do our best to provide a good balance between privacy and usability
Whether or not Ubuntu is "safe" is going to depend on your own threshold for that term. Clearly the majority of mobile device users feel Android and iOS are "safe" enough to use, and by that standard I think Ubuntu would easily quality as safe as well.

Well, if that is the standard they want to reach

Wow, good job by stskeep.
So this means Canonical is no better than Android OEMs.
In fact, when compared to SONY or Samsung, they're just... wrong.

What's next?
Forcing people to pay for (desktop) Ubuntu...??

By the way, was I the only one to notice the Krillin and Vegeta references in the "source code".

I am no lawyer, obviously, but... the licensing is worrying, but for mediatek and the distributor more than the end user.

The device includes a linux kernel, statically linked with some "proprietary" code.

The inclusion of the code implies accepting relicensing according to to the GPL, and indeed the source is available, even if it includes confidentiality notes that are not enforceable, because they contradict the GPL text.

So the only option of Mediatek is to make their code GPL too, or face litigation, and refund end users.

It looks they did not check with their legal department when adding the text... Or they did not do the needed legal research. But since the code is available, after all, at least, apparently, maybe they just need to fix their headers.
