You know, I'm getting a little tired of people talking about the benefits of QT without showing in real life what it can do. If all of the "claims" were true, then every new QT App for the N8 should be available for the N900.

So where is it? Where is the flood of QT based apps written for other platforms but then automatically available for the N900?

Some people should get out once in a while and if possible without Nokia N900.
When they are used to that feeling, they may go out with N900 to sense the difference and learn to be happy with what they already have.
I'm sorry but your sense of what is acceptable in terms of technology is outdated. Maybe 10 years ago, if I had a Palm III, I'd say, it is what it is, live with it. Technology today moves quickly and when we purchase a platform there is an expectation that there is a that the vendor give support for a reasonable amount of time. Within months of the the N900 release it was clear Nokia had plans to kill the Maemo platform which has been clearly demonstrated by the recent PR's 1.2 and 1.3 (lack of features).

This is certainly unacceptable. While I can understand to a certain extent Nokia's logic, their claims that QT will solve all problems has yet to materialize. Why will it? QT has been available at multiple versions and still we wait... soon QT will.. or we'll have QT this and QT that.

Well, I think that's all fine and dandy but until Nokia delivers something that is generic QT that we can start running. This isn't to say that there aren't QT apps written for the N900. Sure there are, but like I said, when we can pluck a QT app that were written for the N8 and plop it on the N900 then I'll decide, Nokia has given us a viable alternative for the near future. Until then I think the voices of dissent are warranted and reasonable.

just keep in mind that there is no official announcement from nokia so support might be 11 months or 14+ months. still 11 months is hella lot more than 2 months someone suggested....

PR 1.3 was sustaining support, the type of minor bug fixes you do right before the product is no longer supported at all. Somewhere between PR 1.2 and 1.3 was when they officially ended active support. Since PR 1.3 the N900 is in a sustaining type of support that only includes minor bug fixes that address stability and performance. Not the type of support you expect in an actively supported product.

Just over 2 months after the N900 was announced was when the MeeGo announcment was. Maybe it was 3 months, but it was clear then that Maemo had no future. For many that was when the writing was on the wall. I can see people arguing that Nokia started the EOL cycle then. By then PR 1.1 and 1.2 were already actively being worked on and instead of killing it they were probably asked to finish it and that that would be it aside from minor fixes which is what we see in 1.3. I don't think anyone is surprised that the N900 had no future the day MeeGo was announced.

On one hand I empathize with the discouraged sentiment.

On the other, the writing appeared on the wall for Maemo the very day MeeGo was announced. From that point on end of life was not an if but a when.

edit: should have read geohsia's post first...

You are aware that the Nokia N8 does not even have Skype?

This example just because this rumour that Nokia has "ended support for Maemo 5" was given by the same person that somehow unluckily decided to status upgrade to WONTFIX a bug that has been solved already (beyond Nokia's control)

Skype Video on Nokia N900 does work much better than before thanks to Skype upgrading their clients on other patforms too.
Nokia did not end support for Maemo 5 unless another reliable source confirms this statement.

You are aware that the Nokia N8 today does not even have a "share online" function? (for a camera phone)
Oh wait, there is an app for that (pixelpipe)
Yeah go give out your flickr password to another 3rd party.

This to say that IF there were any new and interesting QT written and available for Nokia N8 Symbian^3 that that would benefit the Nokia N900, porting them back to Meamo would be possible quite effortlessly.

We want something that works like we imagined. Not work with something some marketing department imagined would sell for big bucks because of hype capable.
Since I first witnessed the pathetic online capabilities of the first WAP phones I have waited more than 10 years for something like the N900 to be finally available.

As for Qt 4.7 there is MeeGo 1.1 on netbooks supporting it besides the N900, and yesterday the WeTab updated to Qt 4.7 as well.
So there are at least two more targets besides the N900. Hopefully we'll see some cross-platform stuff.

It is out. But not your fault for not knowing it as it was released only a day ago.

And your point is?

BTW, the N8 has Skype as of a few days ago, but you're right, I prefer the N900 Skype integrated into the phone UX model.

Great, then show us. Now, I don't know if QT is promising no porting or effortless porting, but all I'm saying is I have yet to see the fruit of these claims.

To your other points that the N900 does some things that the N8 does, that's fine, but arguing somehow that the N8 sucks more doesn't make the N900 any better.

Since I first witnessed the pathetic online capabilities of the first WAP phones I have waited more than 10 years for something like the N900 to be finally available.
So the N900 finally does what we want it to 10 years ago. Great, but I don't live in the past but in the present and I expect a bit more today. Call me greedy.

Thanks Jakiman - you make this a happy day.

Edit: it works but no video of course... (only step 1 out of 2)

BTW- I was one of the early complainers in the N8 topic on Skype fora about "Why no N-series Skype preload and integration as to Barcelona 2009N Nokia & Skype partnership" . Some Skype staff dropped that they would release a version before end of 2010 but that it would not be the full version.

http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=730253

"Don't expect something revolutionary in this release, the exiting stuff is reserved for next year and newer Nokia phones like N8 and such, which finally have the power to do what Skype users want."

It looks like full Skype for Symbian^3 (integrated?) will see the light somewhere one year after the announcement of the N8. Well done Nokia, Skype?

Hope the successor of the N900 can keep the Skype integration!

@geoshia

Ok but apart from making the overall experience of Maemo 5 smoother and Nokia official commitment to support and upgrade the OS during another x years?
What are your really missing today?
I am missing a full blown e-mail client. But then again, the N900 has mobile Firefox rendering Zoho mail in full desktop version.
I envy the N8's HDMI out. It would be so much more justified on the N900.

Symbian^3 is very new and the "app shop" is full of children stuff.
Let's see if it helps some beautiful QT apps to appear over the next 12 months and then if those apps find their way to the antique N900
