Hi dburr10085

Just to make sure : did you follow the instructions on how to install on HE (not using the 2007 packages but the 2006) ?

My suggestion is to do a clean unninstall ( theres a thread that talks about this : how to remove canola 8x00 from 770 ) and then reboot, and install a clean version after that following the instructions.

But I will post my advice : HE is a complicated distro... I would suggest you to use the more stable 2006 version if you can.

I too had the 'unable to install' error with the appearing icon and non-functioning program, and had to figure out how to get root to be able to remove the failed install.

For reference, this is on my N810, using the instructions on the Canola website. I've never had any previous version of Canola installed.

I have the following repositories:

Nokia catalog
Nokia catalog (3rd party software)
Nokia System Software Updates
maemo Extras
Graham Cobb's repository (www.cobb.uk.net/apt user)
Maemo Hackers (maemo-hackers.org/apt main)
FBReader Repository (www.fbreader.org/maemo user)
Vagalume Last.fm Client (apt.igalia.com vagalume)
maemo (repository.maemo.org free non-free)

That's it -- very few applications installed so far, as you can imagine. I can give you a full list if that would be useful in tracking down what might be causing the dependency issue, as some were installed directly.

I realize this is beta software, and am quite intrigued by what I've seen in screenshots and heard about the program. But as a "wanting to use it out-of-the-box" user, the failed install/uninstall experience isn't a good one.

Now that I've apparently gotten it successfully removed, I won't be retrying the install process again unless you need/want me to reproduce errors. I realize I could install it via apt-get now, but I'd rather test out the 'end result' and install via the application manager as normal.

Hi Jennifer :

Thanks for the info. I'm trying right now (tedious tasks) the following :
A flash the device (install one of the repositories you said.. try to install canola2 and then go again and again.

We need to find out what repositories creates the problems, and how to solve it.

realize this is beta software, and am quite intrigued by what I've seen in screenshots and heard about the program. But as a "wanting to use it out-of-the-box" user, the failed install/uninstall experience isn't a good one.
I'm responsible for Canola2 "user experience" side, and as you can imagine this if for sure our biggest concern. As I said in other posts we have a limited number of devices and even with that, we tested with all the platforms with all the softwares with canola 1 and canola2 installed. Everything goes fine... it's really one of the repos that is causing this whole madness and we will find out.

Now that I've apparently gotten it successfully removed, I won't be retrying the install process again unless you need/want me to reproduce errors. I realize I could install it via apt-get now, but I'd rather test out the 'end result' and install via the application manager as normal.
Thanks for being patient with us, and I can assure you we're doing our best to every release improve it. But seems that Murphy's law just love us =)

Jokes aside, I think it's our biggest challenger now, figure out how to "protect" the software from this "adversities" and in the end... We know that even if it's not our fault.. it becomes our fault! The question is always : "How to deal with complex user behaviors " in a platform with now dozen of repositories? : /

Thanks again!

@rjoudrey :

No, the ln command will create a "link" that when you try to access the /home/user/.canola/covers , it redirects any application to the other folder. Including canola. So canola don't execute it never, and if you need to remove in the future you need to do it.
