Any one have any luck using AnyDVD with CloneDVDmobile? I played around with CloneDVDmobile yesterday and was unable to adequately convert a file. Either picture quality was not up to par or audio was off.

I just converted a PAL DVD (orig source 720 x 576, aspect ratio 1.78) using Handbrake 0.9.4 (Win7 x64).

I set it to Width: 640.

With Keep Aspect Ratio ticked, Handbrake set the height to 352.

Rest of the settings were normal iPhone/iPod, except I reduced the constant quality to 50.98% RF:25 because I wanted a smaller file size.

(BTW: What does RF:25 mean ?)

Anyway, when I play it back on the N900, I can see black vertical bars appearing and disappearing on the side of the picture, ie sometimes the picture is 800pix wide, other times it drops to say 720 wide with 40 pixel wide black bars on the sides, then it jumps back to 800 pix wide. It is doing this in and out constantly throughout the playback.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong ?

Trying from a different pc this morning (XP instead fof vista, but slow and clunky).

D/led handbrake and installed. Added the presets from the wiki. Inserted DVD.

Loooong slow wait for scan... then thump: according the THIS computer, it can't handle the DVD becuase of the copy protection.

Did wonder in the middle of the night whether the region settings, and whether it's PAL or NTSC make any difference... is handbrake primarily intended for the US market?

Edit: now trying with a dvd I KNOW is not copy-protected.

Using the presets from the wiki, it claims it will take eight and a quarter hours to rip one hour of video. Unfortunately, I have a life... any suggestions? Should I leave the pc running and forget about it till tea time?

Meanwhile, what was the item that was recommended to rip endoded material? I don't wish to do anythign seriously illegal, but I paid perfectly good money for the DVDs (I think my 'classic wombles collection' cost £2.99) and would like to transfer the content to a different device. In UK law, that's a very grey area.

RevdKathy eight hours? What are your computers specs. I think that depending on encoders settings and your computers speed you can get high as 100fps encoding speeds.

This pc is not 'modern' - it's about 5 years old.. I suspect it's an issue with the presets, making something huge.

Edit to add... an hour later, and 10% done.. and it still reckons over 8 hours. I feel like I have entered the twilight zone here.

Ok... multi step process.

Step one: install DVD decrypter. Allow it to rip the entire DVD to a separate directory removing the silly encoding.

Step two: con handbrake that the un-encoded folder is actually the DVD... and run using Fatalsaint's presets.

Step three: transfer to n900 via mass storage.

Step four: go through thread and thank everyone who helped.

I'll write a wiki page... but right now, I'm off to celebrate with a lot of chocolate.

You should be able to remove step one by using DVD43. By running that any ripper should think any DVD is unprotected

Adding in the results from experiment 2. I used the presets from the wiki to encode a one hour dvd that I knew wasn't encoded. This was a long haul - those presets take an age and output a huge file. A one hour dvd is about a 2gb file once transfered. (And I was using the old, slow XP pc).

However, I can say that the result is nothing short of awesome! The files I've been playing with so far are 1960s and 70s childrens animations, so quality was not perfect on the originals, and I couldn't really comment of the quality of output. This, on the other hand, was a high quality video of classical music and footage of streams, sea and wildlife. And effect is stunning. It really makes the most of the n900's gorgeous screen resolution.

So now my n900 has hours of amusement watching kiddies shows and something classy and relaxing for those stressy moments when even liqflow can't calm me down.

Damnit!! I went back and cleared out that entry lol... I figured since it didn't work - I didn't want people coming behind us and trying and failing with my preset that didn't work!!!

I don't have it here at work.. I'll go fix my post again.
