Yes, it is.

But somewhere in there is a human story. I'm sorry the OP didn't like his n900, and I wish him nothing but satisfaction using whatever alternative he chooses.

But I wonder, too, about the relationship between Father and Son that would mean a Dad would spend a hell of a lot of money on something without first asking if it would be wanted or appropriate. And I most certainly wonder about anyone who sells a gift in such a careless manner just a week after receiving it .

It's stories like that which make me sad for the people we have become.

It doesn't matter what toys we use - they don't seem to make us nicer people, as this thead more than demonstrates.

OP is a troll. So, I would not believe much of what he says. As far as trolls go, this particular one may have neither N900 nor father.

The only thing he is correct about is the lack of apps on the n900 but that is something all of us that has one or wants one should obv be aware of. I don't see the op's point of pointing out the freaking obvious. It will take time for the apps to build for the full potential of the n900 to be achieved, it is an underdog story for our friend the n900.

All the hacks and tweaks he speaks about the n900 can do better, the screen on the n900 is amazing it blows away my gfs itouch, I have a physical keyboard, better sounding speakers, great sounding mp3 player, it plays divx, xvid, fm transmitter is awesome cause it works, the Zeiss lens comes in handy, tv out is great when your away on vacation and want to watch some movies...so on and so on..

He gave it only a week to pass judgment on the n900 his views on the n900 seemed very bias and not very well thought out imo.

I would agree given the need to have an app to do anything on the iphone, the n900 is a dinosaur.
Its a little rough around the edges, but i dont want to have hundreds of apps to do basic functionality - which is where the n900 is different.
a really good browser, integrated IM and email makes all the difference. sure it is a bit rough around the edges, but that looks like it will change very quickly with FW updates.

the current evolution is you need a separate app for everything.
I fear this t rex is going to tear the current competition to pieces.

i hope that microb includes geolocation soon

I find your post to be most 'offensive' of them all actually. Everyone have a right to be as passionate as they want about a gadget. You slamming people for posting here - and then posting yourself is rather ironic.

Bolding choice-pats of sentences asking me to do this and moderators to do that - in bold text - is really coming across as very abrasive and holier-than-thou.
Mate, here's the deal.
There is already a thread for owners first impressions, i don't see how you are different from any of us. If every satisfied or unsatisfied customer opens a new thread to say his very subjective opinion (*cough* shitty dinosaur) this "talk" part of comunity is sentenced to fail. Because there is already thousands of customers and there is going to be even more of them. On the other side, if you wanted to sell your phone you surely missed the right part of the forum.
I respect your opinion, you see, there is no "fanboy" or "your dad" words as i am not going to behave like a child, i was just asking nicely to stop this on time. So i can't see how i was offensive.
Btw, i have nothing against being passionate about gadgets, i am myself passionate about them, but this is the wrong way to show it.
You're sticking your finger in so many eyes here and that isn't a good approach. What did you expect after writing that kind of words on Maemo based forum? I respect your choice but i find your impressions too much based on emotions rather on facts. I can understand disappointment, but if your read what you wrote there are really few facts and opposite of that many fact-less sentences full of dissatisfaction.

The N900 just needs to get integrated Google Voice support natively and sync with Google contacts seamlessly. This is the only thing holding me back from the N900. I hope it is able to mature.

Thank you for moving this.

a little off topic but i love the tags from this thread.
"here we go again"
"lord help us"
"n900 for sale"

this thread has gone on for way too long.

Sorry, but the N900 is NOT "smartphoner" friendly and I have been warning about this for a while in regards to their assumptions. I also warned that as more people get the N900, these type of posts will increase. The device is still constrained with supply- you all have not seen posts yet compared to what will come:

Here are samples that will come from the smartphone crowd and some posted by people that actually like the device- a mix of legit and trivial points:

1. Where is MMS?
2. Where is portrait?
3. Where are the apps?
4. Wifi and GPRS issues
5. Battery problems (I think this is mainly due to Flash)
6. Codec issues
7. Media player issues like playlists
8. GPS problems
9. Emulator issues (not as good as WM or Android options- yet)
10. Stuttering video at start-up
11. Youtube stuttering and HQ not as good as other devices.
12. People messing their N900 up due to installing out of "safe" repositories.
13. Apparently weak USB connector
14. Weak 2G reception for low areas
15. Blurry flash photos
16. Problematic auto focus
17. MP3 player can be a stuttery mess when browser is open and using it.
18. FM radio signal is weak
19. Where is the file indexing? The OS seems to refresh everytime you open a directory.

These are just the things I thought of in a few minutes, but all have some truth to them to at least a trace level. If just perception, the point is the issues are perceived as problems.

If the N900 was targeted to smartphoners, it was released too early and should have been more oriented to a consumer level device.

The N900 seems like a beta device to me- kind of like the G1 was for Android, but the G1 at least functioned really well as a smartphone. It sucked for about everything else when launched.

Added:

Another point is some of the fanboys will only drive people away from the N900. As luck will have it, some of those people could have provided contributions to the community down the road. A constrained user base tends to not be a good thing.

Then get a different smartphone and stop whining. But, just because I am bored...

1. Where is MMS?
What is MMS?

2. Where is portrait?
Whose portrait are you talking about?

3. Where are the apps?
In the repositories: Extras, Extras-Testing, Extras-Devel, Qole's.

4. Wifi and GPRS issues
What issues? I have no issues with either.

5. Battery problems (I think this is mainly due to Flash)
My device makes it through the day (12-14 hours). I consider this sufficient, although not very good. It is typical for modern smartphones too.

6. Codec issues
Pretty much no issues felt here. 99% of videos I throw at it play.

7. Media player issues like playlists
8. GPS problems
First two complaints that are actually valid. Seem to be avoidable by using third party software though.

9. Emulator issues (not as good as WM or Android options- yet)
This has nothing to do with Maemo or N900. Emulators you are talking about are third party applications. If you do not like them, write your own.

10. Stuttering video at start-up
And that is how long? 2 seconds at the beginning of 1:40 hours of video? A real problem, indeed...

11. Youtube stuttering and HQ not as good as other devices.
Ok. What "other devices"? And have you tried dedicated YouTube players for Maemo (as opposed to playing in the browser)?

12. People messing their N900 up due to installing out of "safe" repositories
Again, this has nothing to do with Maemo or N900. You should accept responsibility for your own actions.

13. Apparently weak USB connector
Good, yet another valid complaint supported by evidence. That makes three of them.

14. Weak 2G reception for low areas
I am in a lot of "low areas" here, and N900 seems to do better than the business-class E70.

15. Blurry flash photos
16. Problematic auto focus
Skip on drugs and alcohol before making photos.

17. MP3 player can be a stuttery mess when browser is open and using it.
Eh? Really? Never seen this happen, and I do browse and listen to MP3s a lot.

18. FM radio signal is weak
Well, you will never become a radio pirate with N900, but maybe it is a good thing.

19. Where is the file indexing? The OS seems to refresh everytime you open a directory.
Sorry, I am not sure anyone can understand this one. It just mixes several unrelated things in two sentences.

These are just the things I thought of in a few minutes, but all have some truth to them to at least a trace level. If just perception, the point is the issues are perceived as problems.
Not sure if it is going to be useful, but I do suggest you spend some more time thinking before you post. You have got about 3/19 items right, as in "supported by evidence and posing a real usage problem".Believe me, 16% is not a very good hit rate.
