Stop being so single minded. Think of other kinds of end users. Us "techies" are a small portion of the market. Like someone said about old people with photo albums. iPad would be easy for them to learn for simple things like that. Newspapers is another good example.
No one wants to be made to sit in front of a desktop computer or carry a heavy laptop and have it be confusing. Old people still don't understand how the mouse corresponds to the cursor on the screen. Here they just touch the screen for profit. With a screen that's just about large enough to actually see something on it.
I bet people who don't own a computer and have the most basic mobile phone there is, could find a use for this in stuff like that.

Yes, I can see you've successfully put yourself in the content creator's shoes to empathize with their motivations and challenges.

Personally, I want more 'real' digital content. Not free blogs or self-funded hobbyist sites or ad littered commercial sites.

I wonder how many people were saying they didn't need an iPod when the first, clunky, device was released back in 2001? And then iTunes came along, and following the introduction of the iTunes Store in 2003 suddenly the Apple iPod was the portable music device to own, ignore the rest.

If the content providers can provide their wares for this iPad device, and they surely will, it may be another slow burn success for Apple.

I could see the day when great content - interesting, insightful content - is only available on a subscription basis for the Apple iPad. And not for any other similar device. And not via the traditional web where it can be had for free.

Who knows where Apple are heading with this, but I suspect this is just the beginning of a longer term strategy dictating how we consume media, and how they will be able to control it.

Well, its capacitive, it should be finger writing...

LOL you are still having to contend with the same claptrap now as then.
Yep, I can be a bit of a struck record but hey, Maemo is nice 'n all but we're 5 years on and that's all it is - nice. Still so far to go.

I guess it's not what the new N900 owners want to hear, but hey - lets see if they stump up for the next device if/when Harmattan turns out to be incompatible and all the outstanding, irritating, and annoying bugs in Fremantle become "WONTFIX", and may not even be fixed in Harmattan...

I empathize with the creators, and I fully support the just reward for their work. But I don't think DRM is the solution, and neither I like the industry and intermediares around them.

Why I don't think DRM is the solution? Because it doesn't work! As I said before, it keep gets cracked.

I hope that day doesn't ever happen. Quite a turn around for the company that bashed PC users as mindless, orwellian drones.

The release is still 60 days away.

Just watch all the deals they will announce leading up to it. I wouldn't be surprised if OS4.0 makes an appearance by then, filling in a few missing features on the iPad.. (multitasking?)

They'll bring the bookstore and magazine subscriptions and all kinds of conventional print media to it...

I don't want to derail this to a DRM discussion. But I don't see any better solutions yet, especially for non-expiring media (books vs periodical medias like magazines and newspaper). And to a significant extent, a DRM structure like apple has implemented decrease the amount of piracy - when the correct elements are put in place: agreeable price points and convenient access.

I'm not talking specifically about DRM files. But a DRM-supported infrastructure of store-payment system-delivery system.
