Nokia'a hardware quality is never usually questioned and always praised. Its the software side that is letting them down. After using Maemo, Android, iphone for a while and then switching to Symbian v3 or v5, you realise how outdated and cumbersome Symbian really is.

The biggest problem I see is that it looks completely uninspiring unless they've left major things out of the prototype. Given the specs and possible services, they could have a winner, but the execution just looks half assed again.
-The material needs to be more attractive.
-The bezel needs to lose the crack.
-The theme needs prettier icons, colors and widget backgrounds.
-The screen needs to come just a bit closer to the edge.
I'm willing to take Eldar's opinion of the UI with a grain of salt, but the smartphone market is so fashion-conscious nowadays that offering ten different case colours isn't enough.
Relying on S^4 for the real UI update is good enough, but not if the rest of the design has progressed this little.
-The material needs to be more attractive.

I think instead of looking at what the Nokia N8-00, we should be thinking if this is the Symbian device what will the Harmattan/MeeGo device have? This is a pretty speced out device and Harmattan/MeeGo is suppose to be the high end.

Icons i agree could be prettier. If i buy it i change the icons to Symbian Foundation theme that looks better than Nokia imo.

Hmm you are looking at pictures Eldar posted?
Every rumour for now have said it's made of aluminium and Eldar commented on his twitter that it's made of anodised aluminium.
Looking at the pictures it sure looks like it to me at least.
