Yep, Google Maps. Not only will it be vector, but also 3d, and rotatable with a two-finger gesture. This means lower bandwidth, more caching, and better map detail.

Best of all? The new version is going to be released in a few days.

Let's hope that performance is up to snuff. It would be a shame if it was a giant lag-fest.

One of the things I love about Google: frequent updates, frequent improvements and untying applications from the OS. ALL of the things Nokia should have done ages ago with Maemo but never did.

Instead you get the carriers and device vendors playing interference

Elaborate? Or are you pointing out how nobody's interested in fighting over Maemo/MeeGo?

I have to elaborate on how carriers and vendors have been glacially slow to provide updates to their devices, especially ones like Motorola that you can't load 3rd party ROMs on?

My point is that despite Google's frequent updates to the OS, the end users are often not granted such upgrades for some time. Granted, MeeGo wouldn't be immune to it but I take such positives as you mention with a large grain of salt. It's true, yes, but for a limited audience.

I'm sorry I haven't had time to read all the pages here, but one friend is bugging me with a question about the Tab: can he tether to the Tab his Blackberry to use its unlimited 3G?

Thanks for your answers.

No idea, but I suspect it would be possible. Sorry!

Perhaps someone else here can help with this?

Here's the kicker: Updates to the OS itself aren't as frequent at all. What I love is that Google disconnected their (previously packed-in) applications from the OS and are updating them far more frequently. So, even though you might still be running Android 2.1 on a lot of devices, you're still getting the latest updates to Google Maps, Google StreetView, Google Search, Google Voice, etc. which had previously not been getting bug fixes and updates because they WERE tethered to the OS image. Something that I've been complaining about with Maemo for years now. It's as painful as pulling teeth to disassociate the applications that make the OS useful in Maemo, while Google did it with relative ease. How's the updates to OviMaps on Maemo coming? How about Maemo's Calendar?

As for the Linux kernel, Dalvik (and sometimes Launcher, depending on the device) which comprise Android itself, the source code is there and ready for them and it's up to each device manufacturer to gussy it up like a whore before releasing it to the audience for a song and dance. In most cases, they're slow to roll out because they're being meticulous with their code review but I'm betting that as time goes on, there'll be less and less gussying up by carriers because it both ruins the experience for users and also causes the carriers to spend lots of time and money to customize. Vote with your dollars, and you'll see more carriers doing whatever brings in the cash more often. (Which is why I didn't buy back into Maemo this time around... I'm still waiting to see if Nokia improves things or just repeats their mistakes.)

I would like to donate the remainder of my speaking time to our good gentleman, wmarone. Thank you.

I think the better question here is, how does Blackberry do tethering? Is it ad-hock WIFI tethering? AP WIFI tethering? Bluetooth PPP/SLIP tethering? Since we're clearly not Blackberry users, we have no idea. I can at least tell you that you can't connect via ad-hock WIFI tethering, at least. Android doesn't yet support ad-hock wifi tethering.

FYI: The Tab itself (at least my Verizon model) has an AP-like WIFI tether app that lets me tether other devices to its 3G bandwidth. This effectively lets my other devices think they're connecting to a plain, ordinary WIFI Access Point (AP).

Also, I should have pointed out that this was also the reason why I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab, this time, instead of waiting for Motorola's new tablet. Motorola's increasingly tightening grip and exclusion of the community prompted me to instead to "vote with my dollars" toward a brand that seems to be moving increasingly toward opening up to open-source development and welcomes rooting and modding. Motorola may have brought me in, but they lost me as a customer once they began locking down their units. Untethering Google's closed-source apps from the operating system was an excellent step, on Google's part, to give users the best of what they want out of their operating system independent of the version of operating system they're running. The differences are now mainly reliant on the hardware manufacturers and carriers--and those purchasing decisions are something that anybody can ultimately control regardless of their technical aptitude.
