Well up to now my N900 hasn't put a foot wrong and it's most definately the best handheld piece of kit in my entire life so far and I'm getting on a bit lol!

After mastering the art of extending my N900's desktops from 4 to 9 and more importantly mastering the art, almost, of placing backgrounds on them, in conjunction with the desktop switcher widget, I am addicted to making my screens look the business and be practical at the same time.

Kudos so far has to go to Richwhite because he has been so understanding and patient with me, away from this site and now I am joining in here with some immediate questions please.............

I would like your home screen icon Rich and your grey/silver numeric icons to replace the desktop switcher widget ones and some instructions please?

The other matter is how can you resize desktop contact icons when you have substituted an image for the default blue one - I would like one of my new screens to be for my family's contacts all with photos but a little smaller than their default size so they can all fit on.

Is there a software which I should be using to assist with all this - some of the screens are spectacularly good inmho

I hope you or someone can help me please

Cheers

roz

Anybody knows of a simple slick icon set in either steel or plastic look in 2D. I'm working on an idea for a new desktop, still in testing face but can't seem to find a full icon set i like. I want to 'merge' the icons i need into the wallpaper and then only use hidden QBW's to activate/start apps etc. In my testing i found that most of the time the QB's react faster than the shortcuts on the desktops and in the menu and apps opens faster

Well hope somebody can point me to an icon set i havn't seen yet on the net

Heres a screen of my finished one (am tempted to use more than two now these switcher widgets has turned up hahaha)

Stunning... Some icons are blurry, but the idea and its realization are stunning...

Hi Roz, thanks for the kudos and i will upload the icons when i get back to the computer later (using the N900 at the moment).

I haven't a clue about contacts, Qosmio is the one to ask, but software, i used photoshop twice to make transparent backgrounds but otherwise most of us just download icon sets from google or deviantart

Edit: home icon attached. The others were from this icon set, just use the download link http://icons.mysitemyway.com/whitewa...-alphanumeric/
The home one is the correct size already, the rest will need resizing, i made them all 64x64 to be the same as my other icons, but desktop switcher lets you use whatever size you want. use www.picresize.com to do it, 64x64 pixels not percent and make sure to save as a .PNG

Brilliant Rich - you are really a star!

Just one noob and probably stupid question - take the home icon above - how do I replace the original with it exactly? In fact how do you replace any desktop icon, with another one?

cheers again

Install Filebox from extras-devel (it's a safe app don't worry). Connect your N900 to your computer in mass storage mode and open the N900 (not the memory card) then create a new folder, call it Custom or something. Then unplug it, open filebox, tick the 'up' arrow to go two pages back, then it's opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64, in there you'll see what you want to change, like the phone icon is general_call and conversations is general_SMS. Whatever you want to change, hold the icon until a box pops up, tap 'copy', then hit the 'home' icon to go back to MyDocs, open the custom folder and the second icon on the right is clipboard, hit that, tick the icon you copied and then the top icon (paste).

Reconnect to the computer, open Custom, drag the icon(s) to the computer - that's your backup in case it goes wrong. Delete the icon from Custom, drag the custom icon to it and rename to be exactly what the original was, copy then go back to usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64 and hit clipbaord and paste. It will say 'do you want to overwrite', say yes. Reboot and you'll notice a new icon.

The desktop switcher icon is different, they're in /usr/share/pixmaps/desktop-switcher/switch_left.png
/usr/share/pixmaps/desktop-switcher/switch_right.png
they go left and right, for '1' '2' '3' just change to that. 'Home' will be switch_1 I think, you can easily see what to make it by opening the folder in filebox and seeing what it's called.

Once you do it once it's easy. To break it down:
Copy the original icon and paste it in Custom (the 'home' icon in filebox takes you to your MyDocs, where Custom will be when you make it.)
Rename the new one to match the original, put in Custom, then copy it.
Go to the respective folder, for email, sms, phone, contacts etc that's opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64 and clipboard>paste, 'yes' to overwrite. Reboot.
